Loved his running too.

You got an earlier indication of what a bellend Sugar was when he humiliated Sinclair at the 'Amstrad buy Sinclair' press conference.

My 30 years (so far) career in IT is probably partly due to getting my first Spectrum in 1982 (Christmas). Not sure whether to thank him or not. RIP either way Sir Clive. :-) G

I have vivid memories of spending a long, long time typing out a programme copied from a magazine into our dodgy old Spectrum, only for the bloody thing not to work.

Unfortunately I was too young at the time to understand how to debug the code, and the blame certainly can't be levelled at Sir Clive... Yet still I hold him partially responsible ;)

A sad loss, he was certainly in part responsible for my lifelong gaming obsession (although partial credit to the chaps who wrote Colossal Cave Adventure and other text based games that ended up on my Dad's work laptop. We never worked out how to get past Grog's wall of fruit...)

Me too JK - sometimes in assembler, not basic, which was just Hex, so was impossible to tell if you got a 0 to F number or letter combo wrong!

That sounds amazing. The programming version of finding a needle in a haystack :)

I've coded professionally in assembler back in the day (6502, 8088, that era). Not for the faint hearted. Modern programmers etc.

The Grogs wall of fruit reminds me of a text adventure I played with friends. We got stuck at a wall that was said to be in 'mint' condition.

Spent weeks trying to get over, under, around the wall cos we couldn't guess the password ......... which was Polo !!! I still want to find the creator and punch him/her :-)

Learnt to program on a ZX81 , mostly because I could never get my tape player to load the games :-/

I spent weeks on text-based Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, firstly being unable to escape earth, then not having a clue what to do on the spaceship immediately after leaving earth.

It basically said something like "You can't see anything, feel anything, smell anything or taste anything." And so the answer was to listen, whereupon you'd be given another similar list, but with a different missing sense.

Frustrating. I wonder if there's a place on the Internet where text-based adventures have gathered. I'd love to find the game with Grog and his wall of fruit (and a random thief, I think!), and work out how to beat it!
