I never had a Spectrum but I did have a ZX81 then moved to a Dragon 32. But I did spend hours with mates on their Spectrums playing games in the early 80s

We spent hours on Treasure Island, we even created a map consisting of about 5 pages of A4 taped together to try to beat it. Also many variations on Dizzy, Survival (how to die whether you're a butterfly or a tiger), Sherlock Holmes (navigating London in a text based game) and many others that I can't remember the names of.
I don't know much about him as a person, but he certainly defined my childhood.

Didn’t the HHGTTG game involve making tea, or did I imagine that?

And both 'tea' and 'no tea' were both inventory items.

Too many boths - but you're right, Grep - the game worked because it was very, very close to the spirit of the books. I think Douglas Adams wrote the game text and mechanics (not necessarily the code) himself?

Oooh, I never saw Sherlock Holmes, GG. I suspect my London geography would have been much better if I had...

We spent hours just working out how to get out of the house and hail a taxi (Hansom cab).

The first games I ever played on a Spectrum were Horace Goes Skiing and Frogger back in 1982 when my middle school first got computers.
I found text based adventures very tedious and boring.

I got bored by most of the text adventures but The Never Ending Story was excellent - the music and novelty (I think it was one of their first movie tie-in games) helped.
I loved Horace but I don't remember Speccy Frogger at all!

There's a thread on twitter by Shahid Kamal Ahmad about how he got into coding computer games and ported Jet Set Willy, really awesome storytelling.
