Perhaps I move in the wrong circles, Angus. But the only thing that seems to get as much scorn from some runners I know is the wearing of Hoka's ;-)

To be honest if they are good enough for Kilian Jornet.

Totally unproven and maybe more psychological than real, in 2019 I think I may have got around the Lakeland 100 I hadn't broken on pole due to slipping when descending a stile just after Blencathra Centre. :(

Just found this thread :)

I’m not a regular pole user but I bought some over the winter with a view to using them in an ultra (now postponed). I used them in a very hilly and muddy trail race that I was doing as a training run, I don’t think I would have stayed upright through the whole course if I hadn’t had them. I also found them really helpful for getting up and down the hills, and also towards the end when I was tired. I probably walked around 75% of the race.

I bought Leki Nordic walking poles. I went on a Nordic walking course last year and I like Nordic poles because you don’t have to put much effort in to holding the handles. Unfortunately there’s not an awful lot of choice in lightweight folding Nordic poles, hence going for the expensive option.

We have Leki poles. They are just superbly comfortable and really well balanced.

Lekis here too. Bought around 20 years ago from the Skye Outdoor Shop and still as good today. I was reluctant to use them at first but they were a revelation from the off. They are a knee saver on descents, extra arms and points of contact on ascents and they increase speed on the flat. All less effort for better results and keeps you fresher for the next day. River and muddy crossings become much easier.

I think people think that they'll look like a twonk using them: get over it. I've spotted many people not using them at all on descents and that's just madness. It's sort of like mask wearing...

Ours were a wedding present, 20 years ago. Haven’t seen so much action in the last few years but, as Zen says, still as good as new.

To those who find poles helpful - do you use folding or telescopic and which is best (and does that answer differ depending on whether you are walking, running or racing)?

Telescopic. I like the fact it’s really easy and quick to adjust the length (for example traversing steep ground you can shorten your uphill pole and lengthen the downhill one).

I’ve only ever used them for walking.

Telescopic, although I've often wished for magically sprung folding poles when there's a need for scrambling. Something akin to "go go gadget poles". Backpacks often have natty loops for holding poles, and they're ideal if you're with someone, as they can stow and retrieve them for you, and you theirs.

Changing pole length for different terrain, ups and downs is a thing too and it's not much bother. I haven't looked at new poles to see what's nifty these days.
