Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Thanks for that DT - listened this morning. I can still remember taking a can of Barrs Shandy on a school trip which was 1.2% but was free for sale to kids.

Barr's being a Scottish brand larks. And they wonder why we have a problem with alcoholism up here in Scotland?! :-) G

I used to have Panda Shandy most days in my lunch box. Just googled and it’s apparently 0.5%, but I’d have been probably 7-10 at the time. Not sure if it’s still around.

ISTR they were all "not more than 1.2%" back then.

e.g. canmuseum.com

(The archive of the panda one doesn't show the ABV unfortunately! But what a great website!)

I find that some of the 0.0%s still taste like the old alco free beers of 20 years ago which had a horrible aftertaste in the way that diet coke tastes different to coke. Maybe it is the 0.00% versus 0.05%

The 0.3%-0.5%s seem to be way closer in taste to regular versions and I found a fairly limited different between the LA and full fat versions of ghost ship - my favourite LA beer

I felt a bit giddy after a couple of 0.5% Ghost Ships. Not had it since

Do you reckon they just stick LA labels on the regular stuff then : )

Ghost Ship is nice.

Do you really think you can "feel" 0.5% DT? I am pretty sure I can't. But then I rarely have more than one.

Before I stopped drinking properly I used to seek out low alcohol lagers - 3% or 2%, there were a few of them for a while. But a couple of those were the same as one "normal" strength lager and I didn't like that. Could def feel it. So I stopped trying those altogether, whatever the flavour. :-) G

I had a very bad headache and actually felt rough and hungover after 3 or 4 of some local 0.05% stuff in Portugal. Of course I know it wasn’t the alcohol, but it was something in that drink that caused me to feel quite rough. I now make sure I try and get the ones that have had alcohol taken out of them, rather than being messed about with too much in other ways, as I personally find that a) they taste much nicer and b) I don’t seem to suffer with unexpected after effects.

I'm sceptical that you could feel 0.5%; I know I certainly couldn't. The "science" suggests that your body disposes of alcohol at those sorts of levels as quickly as you consume it, unless you have some other issue which means you process alcohol very slowly.

Though this website suggests that it isn't impossible for a 0.5% beer to actually be 1% (there's a 0.5% tolerance apparently on beer ABV labelling). Even so, I'd still expect it to have run through me without noticing.

steadydrinker.com

After years of seeing ads for it on German TV (when we used a satellite dish to get F1 for free via FTA german broadcasts) Aldi now stock Rheinbacher Pilsner 0.0% which is good value at £2.70 for 6 bottles. (At least, I think it's the same one I saw on their ads - name is similar, might be different though). Been drinking a fair few of those recently on the warmer days because I'm out of cheap sparkling water (my thirst quencher of choice when kept in a fridge).

Aldi's low alcohol range was always a bit underwhelming, so it's been good to see decent quantities of this appearing.
