Lizzie W I'm enjoying Lidl beans at the moment but no idea whether you can get them in the UK. The Crema variety (they have three here and that's the weakest in strength); 1 kilo for £8.45 (converted from kronor).

I picked up a bag of dark espresso beans from Tesco at £8 for a kilo. Not tried them yet.

I'm used to cheaper beans looking slightly greasy and having an unpleasant aftertaste. The Lidl ones have neither.

I spent a month in Vietnam, but when we arrived in the north they had unexpected floods and it was raining every day. We couldn’t do the trekking we planned to do and consoled ourselves with delicious hot coffee and food, after short walks/exploring and having to return to damp accommodation! We got so used to hot coffee, when we headed south we stuck with one strong one in the morning and always hot. So … I never had iced coffee in Vietnam, strangely. Bloody lovely coffee though and the food … mmmm mmm mmmmmmmmmm.

I have been a few times for work and once on holiday. Absolutely love the people, the food and the coffee hot, or cold

If I understand correctly, darker roasts can look more oily straight away - which is fine, if that's the roast you wanted. If a lighter roast looks oily it can be a sign that quite a time has passed since it was roasted, which you probably don't want.

On our cycling trip to Vietnam a few years ago I was initially very disappointed with the coffee as everyone tried to offer us Nescafé instant. Once I got past that things looked up. Although as a black coffee drinker 100% Robusta coffees are an acquired taste. I would have the sweetened coffee they serve instead of cake. Blends with more Robusta in them are coffees that we will see more of in the future due to cost and climate. |
