I've got this one: en.wikipedia.org de.wikipedia.org They call it an espresso maker in Germany (see link 2) but the Italians would calll it a moka. I think the difference is with how much pressure the steam goes through the ground powder. For an espresso you'd need more than the stove top can provide. My grandmother didn't have electricity in her home until the 1960s so this was the only way to brew it. |

Retailers make that mistake in Norway too. Note that on Bialetti's own website they make no claim that it makes espresso. Indeed, they specifically state not to use coffee ground for espresso (very fine) in the manual. bialetti.com They're quite happy to muddy the waters by calling it the Bialetti “Express” meaning fast, one assumes, though.

My German is non existent but even that article talks about the name being "false" if I'm not much mistaken? It's pedantry though from me; for a lot of people espresso just means "really strong short black coffee" which might come from a Moka pot or a pressurised espresso machine (or with a prismo attachment to an aeropress). Only the 6-9bar pressure in an espresso machine (or lever machine) is proper espresso of course. |

Espresso needs at least 9 bar pressure. Not something you achieve with a moka.

That could also be the reason why some people insist on pronouncing espresso 'expresso' because they are thinking of this machine. And yes, I don't use the finest coarseness setting of my grinder even though it's recommended when you make actual espresso. My dad told me not to go too fine. I have 18 grades and I use 4-6 for it. It depends on the beans. They usually use a blend of arabica and robusta for the moka so I'm looking for that when I buy beans. |

larkim, your German is pretty good. That's right, they are talking about the habit of Germans to call this an espresso maker when it technically isn't. The section needs more citations though. Now I really want a caffè made with my moka. |
