Don’t go Gobi. I started this thread, but only because I love my one cup of coffee a day - either home-made or at a really good coffee shop.

I am a person with limited space. (Lodger with an Italian friend who is happy to drink instant!!). I have few gadgets and even gave away my Krups grinder as no room for it.

I have a bean to cup machine and a cheap cafetiere. I really don't like coffee from the cafetiere but it's there for emergencies.

Latest beans are espresso from Lidl - good value for a kilo & they're perfectly fine.

So here’s my list:

Greek briki

Tiny stainless steel Bialetti hob pot bought in Italy while on holiday with friend above. Found in old shop in village on a dusty shelf. (We were in a remote-ish place with few shops.). I’ve since given this away.

Art deco limited edition Bialetti pot - quite big, but only makes 2 little strong coffees.

Phin - bought in Vietnam. Have not managed to find here anything approximating the delicious Vietnamese or Lao beans I had in south-east Asia.

Aeropress - one of the early models and still going strong with no cracks.

Krups grinder - gave to charity household goods shop due to lack of space.

I’m on the lookout for a manual grinder, but in no rush. I’ve never owned a cafètiere. My parents had a filter machine and it may still be up their loft. They also had a big electric percolator metal pot thingy that made a plop-plop noise, but I think that’s not around any more.

I need to look up some of those things RHB’s listed.

Larkim - I would love to have some demos of your gadgets which I haven’t used and see a boffin in action! I’m all about the bean, but I think I need to get the basics good.

I have a reasonable collection of kit, but mostly use my Silvia machine and Iberital grinder; occasional french press / v60 / aeropress / stove top user. I'm more interested in the coffee than the kit tbh. Still mostly Red Brick from Square Mile, but love the Salford Roasters coffee too at the mo. I think I'm a more fruity less burnty kind of person.

I had an Iberital MC2 but the Niche came because I wanted to be able to swap beans and try drinking more varied coffees and decafs. As it turns out, so far I've not changed my tastes much, but swapping between different methods is nice and easy too on the Niche. I know in the grand scheme of things compared to the money some people drop on grinders it's in the moderate range, but its a luxury that should last me for life.

I'm liking the hand grinder at work. Surprisingly effort free to get a good dose for an aeropress. Not intending to try it with espresso though I suspect it could grind fine enough. I'll leave the Niche to do the hard work!

About This Thread

Non-tea drinker here and nowhere to talk about the caffeine bean, so I thought I'd start a thread. ...
