To be fair, that is one of the simpler options. Though "don't plunge" is something of a game changer!! Actually, of all of the coffee methods I've got at home, the French press is the one I never use but my better half hogs. Maybe I should try a Hoffman inspired pot at the weekend! |

That was interesting - I watched the video, had it been longer than four minutes I wouldn’t have… I told you I favour simplicity! Perhaps I’ll consider beans at one point, rather than ground coffee; but then I’d need have to get some device to grind them. Digital scales seem a bit of an overkill… Soft water comes out of the taps already in my part of the world What is the purpose of a water filter? I already wait the amount of time he suggested for plunging though I don’t time it so probably do it for longer. I have a stainless steel cafetiere for durability, but fairly certain I don’t plunge to the bottom. Might try the skimming thing though. I also thought if I bought all that extra kit I might be better off getting a fancy coffee machine instead! |

You don't want to start thinking about grinders Fields. Things move rapidly into Rishi Sunak heated mug levels of decadence... Weighing does make sense though once you've got over the pretentious levels of it. It's just like a recipe for anything else, the ratio of water to coffee is pretty much the only important ingredient thing. But maybe "one scoop" plus "water up to this word on the cafetiere" gets the consistency needed without the faff of scales. I do quite enjoy the "process" though now as a recent covert to scales, grinders etc etc. |

I can see measuring might be of use if making different quantities each time

I belong to two different subcription models that mail me 5 or 6 typically microlots to try per month. For that reason I weigh, use a timer and have one of those Wilfa grinders. If I didn't there'd be a lot of extra noise in trying to work out what's going on. (I needed something to think about too when I gave up comparing whiskies.)

I use a Mokka pot when we go away in the caravan. I don’t think it needs 12 minute tutorial. The bit I hadn’t realised though was his idea of using less water for darker roasts

NordRunner sounds like the ceremony of the process and the recording are part of the ritual for you. And why not, it’s good to learn more about things we enjoy Funny you mention whisky, a whisky drinking friend records his tasting notes etc in an almanac. |

For me, the bean grinding to the right fineness for the method and beans I am using, the loading of the pot/machine, tamping etc all are more important to me, as they give such joy, than the actual drinking. It is the ritual not just the end product. I have been off coffee for nearly 3 weeks as I have been ill. The desire for coffee always tells me when I am better... Not yet... |

Fields, I gave up alcohol a few years back. AFAICT a caffeine problem is not quite so bad

My Krups grinder gives about 10g of coffee for each additional number, so number 5 for grind time is near as damn it 50g. I cross checked with scales a while back.
