Do you coaches out there deliver your sessions based on the athletes macro/meso/microcycles or do you cycle through a set session plan with no specific goal in mind for the athletes?

One of our guys use to have us doing some squats, lunges etc. in between, but you can't really lie down in a wet, Scottish street or track. If you are in a warm, dry country, guess you could do it on a grass area, adjoining a track or street? G

I use 4 session/1 week micro, 4-6 week meso and 1 year/event date macro cycles. Single variable alterations dependent on test/retest results or stagnation. If you're working with groups periodisation is difficult when people come and go on an ad hoc basis. If you're working 1:1 I'd say periodisation is mandatory especially if you're working S&C.

Even though I work with both Junior and Senior athletes in group and 1:1 settings I try to make all my sessions fit into some sort of a macro/meso/microcycle.
As you rightly mentioned, it's much easier to do that for the 1:1's, but it is a little more challenging for the groups. I tend to map out a 'generic' macro/meso/microcycle for the groups I work with (juniors and adults) with a view what am I wanting to develop in the athletes over a set period. For the juniors this will typically be more skills acquisition/development based, whereas the seniors might be more strength, endurance, speed based.

Our group is so mixed in terms of aims and goals it's quite tricky, our schedule is pitched towards improving speed at 10k as that suits a majority and we think the others will still benefit from the weekly speed sessions. We have a hills session every third week and a session including core & strengthening exercises every 4th week. We use street furniture and railings to support natural bodyweight exercises :)G so lying down in the wet isn't a problem!

Working with the Juniors is really tough, as the spread of ability and, probably more importantly, desire to improve is vast.
A coach that gets all participants in a diverse group to improve is something special.
Working 1:1 has got to be easier.

We use a bastardised version Athletics 365 for the Juniors...breaking the groups down as follows:
FUNDAMENTALS: 100% Athletics 365
FOUNDATION: Drop throws, and jumps. Maintain running (speed & endurance) skills and drills, add a little S&C, some simply plyometrics etc. SPECIALISATION: Mainly endurance, a little speed and a little S&C/plyometrics.
It works really well for the Juniors...the younger ones really love the variety and games of the Athletics 365 programme. We are building the whole athlete, not just the part....as they progress through to event specialisation (XC/Road/Track Running) we become more focused on running however, we always revisit the drills and throw in occasional fun games etc.
