Phone app. Just showed paths and no gradients. Just as well I didn't get injured or I'd have been devoured by echidnas long before anyone would stumble on my corpse.

We do 'loop backs' if we're in a mixed pace group, ie designate a point up a to a mile away where we run at our own pace but early arrivals at the point have to run back to the back markers and run in to the point with them. I usually choose much closer turn round points to try and keep the group more together.

ITG - We considered Mt Nelson when we drove past a highlighted walk. But to be honest, the thought of 350m ascent at the end of a fairly long day led us to choose the beers waiting back at the 'cottage'. tastrails.com |

I must admit that's the one thing our groups at my run club don't do - loop back

We loop back or muster at fixed points, with occasional extra ones if we have super speedy people. I cannot understand clubs or groups that don't do it, faster stronger work harder and no-one gets left behind. There is no downside. *gets off soapbox*

Jogscotland HH do the same. Split into six groups based on pace. Then within groups there is re-grouping. Good for those that have newly moved up to a faster group.

Exactly, you can use the loop back for some fartlek - or indeed to take a breather.
