That is the best way to start. I only do press ups three days per week but I've built up the volume so I do 4 sets of 20 each session now. I'm currently focusing on improving my form.

Iโve gone past my sit-ups total of last yearโฆ 135 vs 110 but itโs a start. Would be great to do 5,001 press-ups and 5,001 sit-ups

You'll be surprised how quickly you gain strength, R&P. I discovered this challenge a few years back and decided why not because I've always been useless at any kind of upper body work. I gradually worked my way from sets of 10 to 20 or even 30 and a total of 100 a day or more. I can't say it's left me ripped but I do feel a difference in the arms and shoulders. A little perseverance and a gradual approach will pay off.

Gradual is key! It is quite easy to get shoulder trouble (tendonitis is my unscientific guess) if you up the reps too fast.
