With press ups, what gives the best results please..... 1. One set a day where you go until you drop 2. A number of shorter sets through the day which cumulative add up to more reps |

What "result" are you looking for ? Most you can do in one set, or most you can do through out a day in multiple sets, or something else ?

A little bit of arm definition. Early days. About 20 before I drop. |

Do not go until you drop. It is like intervals, or basic weight training, sets of whatever you can mange, say 10, comfortably, then increase the number of sets, then increase the number in each set, so I would think you can do 3 or 4 sets of 10 with equal amount of rest...have the odd day off, like running. |

The "100 press up a day challenge" had a really interesting format. 5 sets a day - roughly 80%, 60%, 50%, 40%, 85% or something e.g. 15, 12, 9, 6, 16 or last set to failure I guess the idea being that if you can do 20 today, then 15 feels easy, so does 12, 9, 6, but then 16 after 42 feels quite tough. Then it builds up each day, each week etc. I'll try and find the link if useful. G |

hundredpushups.com But then you have to "sign up" for something. I do 3 x something, usually 20 or 25, but always try and do last to failure. Fits in with my 3 x other things too - squats, lunges, sit ups etc. G |

Total volume is going to be the main thing you want, Tim. For that you'll need to break them down into smaller sets and build that up as your strength increases. If you're managing 20 on one go why not try 5 x 5 instead, with short breaks? Then go up to 5 x 6, 5 x 7 etc until you can manage 5 x 10. After that, Rodney, the world is your lobster. |
