I read an article that said the way to go is incline press ups, so on the stairs (going up) for example, and start with you hands on the fourth stair, or your hands on a low bench and go lower as you get stronger. Bit of a bugger if you live in a bungalow.

My daughter (21) couldn’t do one normal press up. I got her to follow a progressive plan over a few weeks. This was using a window sill to rest hands on and she managed a few reps and sets and built up strength. I don’t know how many press ups she can do now as away at uni but to see her achieve the first full press up was very gratifying 😀

10 x 10 in the shed with 15 air squats as recovery. Starting to get back to being able to get through them again.

Incline press ups are better than knee press ups for developing the movement of a full press up. And it is a movement skill as much as strength.

Incline press ups: that's what mine are (though I live in a bungalow). I started on a chair arm, moved to a lower chair arm, then a chair seat, now on two box/step things, below knee level but appreciably above floor level.
