Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Interestingly I read recently that a "long run" wasn't necessary to be able to complete a marathon but rather a good weekly total mileage on a consistent basis. .Not easy to balance family life Donnie1 yet you seem to be doing ok .
4.1 miles in quite a chilly temperature Peter, four layers! Brrr.
Well done on your session hs, suitably arduous!
0c but felt nice in dawn sunshine today, 3.4 miles mainly along the river.

4 top layers contrasts with vest and shorts on Sunday!

I think I must be exception to that theory - I struggled to complete a half despite a good steady weekly mileage.

I could not agree more - I followed a plan religiously before my first marathon, including 3 or 4 20+ mile - and had a dreadful run on the big day.
For my second, I was doing about 40 miles/week but only one run past about 10k (I set out to do 10k, but then I bumped into some friends along the way so ended up closer 10 miles) - resulting in a 26 minute PB.

I'll be doing my final marathon (London) in ~7 weeks time, and don't intend to do anything past a half before then.

I doubt anyone's going to smash out a sub-3 without multiple long runs, but for a "value-for-money" runner like me, I don't see any real benefit - but the downsides are massive.

Thanks Steve, it was a tough session, and I know many will disagree, but I've always believed in "no pain, no gain." Not every session though, as I also believe in easy pace recovery runs and rest days.

Well done for this mornings 3.4 miles, mainly along the river. Sounds like a nice run/walk.

Good to hear from you AndyS, it's been quite a while since you have posted on this thread. You are obviously doing what is best for you to obtain your desired results. We are all different, and I'm probably 'old school." I've run 15 marathons with a PB of 3.12 set when I was 47. I always ran high mileage such as 55 miles per week when marathon training, but no longer run marathons. I have according reduced my mileage considerably, as my longest race distance is 10k, and I'm quite happy parkrunning most Saturdays.

Best of luck with the London Marathon, and please let us know how you got on.

This morning was a solo hilly 4.36 miles on roads

Although I read about "no need for long runs for marathon" in my days of doing them (about 10-12) a few long runs were the way to go, like you hs. A couple of 18's, a couple of 20's and a confidence booster of 22 miles two weeks before a marathon were my programmes. PB 3.08. The bonus I think of such training was that the after effects of the marathon were diminished but also bear in mind that in those days, being a club runner you tended to give it your all and near enough race it. It wasn't just about finishing for those in clubs.
Of course other factors have to be considered: age, (I was in my 30's doing my best times),natural ability, gender, experience, running history and effort out into shorter distances ( to maintain pace).

Yeah HS agree it’s cold here as well horrible northerly cold northerly but I still wore my shorts as it’s March so the leggings have been stored away 😁.
6 miles today with some quicker intervals thrown in to test out the Achilles before the 10k next week. Felt good but let’s see tomorrow morning if it’s grumbly.

I meant " effort put into shorter distances").
Needless to say everyone has their own take on what works best; and obviously I'll never know if a "shorter" long run approach would have yielded better/easier marathons!
I'd add that long runs weren't so time consuming when my pace was ok so didn't detract from other aspects of life.
Why your final marathon AndyS?
I had to quit marathons because of a permanent problem with mobility but if I'd not had the injury maybe I'd have carried on.
Heck, another hilly session hs! Well done. And a nice Farmer's Walk.

MrHSc, my longs are ready to be put away for another year, all being well.

Well done for this mornings 6 miles, and good luck for next weeks 10k race. Please let us know how you got on.

It never occurred to me, to be honest Steve, to ever contemplate running a marathon without a high mileage, albeit reducing during the final 3 weeks. I doubt whether Paula could have set her world record, in the days before 'magic shoes', without her 120+ miles per week.

Thanks, training has been going well lately.

We are intending to do the Queen Elizabeth parkrun tomorrow. This is close to where I lived in Waterlooville, so it will be a bit nostalgic. I did a lot of solo training there. Our times will probably be slower than usual, as according to 'Power of 10' it is rated 797 of 835 hardest parkruns. It is rated 6.52, compared with our local parkruns of 3.

I did it recently HS. Quite tough I’d expect to add on 4/5 mins. It was quite bad conditions and very slippery. You can’t make any gains on the downhill because it’s very uneven underfoot.
Take care on the downhill.
