Interestingly I read recently that a "long run" wasn't necessary to be able to complete a marathon but rather a good weekly total mileage on a consistent basis. .Not easy to balance family life Donnie1 yet you seem to be doing ok . 4.1 miles in quite a chilly temperature Peter, four layers! Brrr. Well done on your session hs, suitably arduous! 0c but felt nice in dawn sunshine today, 3.4 miles mainly along the river. |

4 top layers contrasts with vest and shorts on Sunday! steve45 wrote: Interestingly I read recently that a "long run" wasn't necessary to be able to complete a marathon but rather a good weekly total mileage on a consistent basis. I think I must be exception to that theory - I struggled to complete a half despite a good steady weekly mileage. |

I could not agree more - I followed a plan religiously before my first marathon, including 3 or 4 20+ mile - and had a dreadful run on the big day. For my second, I was doing about 40 miles/week but only one run past about 10k (I set out to do 10k, but then I bumped into some friends along the way so ended up closer 10 miles) - resulting in a 26 minute PB. I'll be doing my final marathon (London) in ~7 weeks time, and don't intend to do anything past a half before then. I doubt anyone's going to smash out a sub-3 without multiple long runs, but for a "value-for-money" runner like me, I don't see any real benefit - but the downsides are massive. |

Thanks Steve, it was a tough session, and I know many will disagree, but I've always believed in "no pain, no gain." Not every session though, as I also believe in easy pace recovery runs and rest days. Well done for this mornings 3.4 miles, mainly along the river. Sounds like a nice run/walk. Good to hear from you AndyS, it's been quite a while since you have posted on this thread. You are obviously doing what is best for you to obtain your desired results. We are all different, and I'm probably 'old school." I've run 15 marathons with a PB of 3.12 set when I was 47. I always ran high mileage such as 55 miles per week when marathon training, but no longer run marathons. I have according reduced my mileage considerably, as my longest race distance is 10k, and I'm quite happy parkrunning most Saturdays. Best of luck with the London Marathon, and please let us know how you got on. This morning was a solo hilly 4.36 miles on roads |
