Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Steve, an interesting post. I agree that it is very possible that our PB's if we had started earlier would have been better. The other side of the coin is that we might not still be running, having burned out earlier.

Ran an easy pace 6 miles in the forest this morning with a running friend.

Steve, that is of course the justification for a WAVA score. :-)

However, as a younger runner, even when I first started at the age of 40, I just wasn't that fast. There's something difficult to articulate that says the act of running itself has made me a "better" runner over the last 20 years, and it didn't really happen until 10 years in. Which, maybe not coincidentally, is when I got really quite serious about it!

So the physiological impact of ageing has been to some extent at least counteracted that of aging in a very limited sample of one!

To support hillstrider's point, most of my friends who were runners earlier on have now given up running citing injury to joints! Although most of them also played contact sports....

I was probably at my best after about 2 years of running at aged 39-40. It was then that I got my 10K PB at 40:37 (nothing like as good as many of you of course). Then a few months after that we had to get ready to move house to Bristol, and running very much took a back seat, so I wasn't able to develop as a runner.

I did my long run (8 miles) this morning, a little quicker than the same route last Saturday.

True comments everyone re PB's and all that. I count myself fortunate that apart from a permanent slight disability (not running related) caused by an injury in my late thirties I have not burned out! For me, not involved in racing at all for thirty years I embrace every run with gratitude (and of course frequent grumbles when I'm struggling!) --maybe there's less pressure, if that's the right word, now that pb days at any level have gone. I would dearly like to break some of my training route times but realistically have to accept that I won't! It cheeses me off fairly often.

I need to watch out... Dave K coming up on my heels

Much improved run this morning, went out in the car to Coate water, nice for a change and it worked... not fast but nice.

Take care all

This morning was the Club's virtual 10k challenge and I ran it in the forest. My time was 57.04, average pace 9.10 minute miling, so very pleased with that. My target was to run sub 60 minutes.

Good running Dave K and hillstrider

4.75m this morning, slow and steady in the sun, so nice out there. Trying to stay ahead of Dave for as long as I can :-)
