Well said geordiegirl Always trying to remember that I’m only competing against myself. I do more than some and much less than others which is no triumph & no tragedy. We are all in our own place doing the best we can

Well said, GG. I try to remember to be careful because of my resurfaced hip. I know other Fetchies are running on replacement hips but even then we can't compare each other because we're all unique! I definitely can't do long run streaks. I have to have rest days or cross training days. I love to see the achievements of others on here. Some fabulous mileages but the target is only a number. Only worth achieving if you're enjoying doing it IMHO. Without the advice and encouragement of Fetchies, I would not have run the marathon and all the half marathons I've done so I really appreciate the advice and support on this thread and other parts of the forum. |

I run way too many Mike's as well. Damn auto correct !!! Just over 9 on the Wednesday long day takes me to 171 I've always been high volume and reasonably successful at every sport I've ever done, I compare myself to younger runners and duathletes. As I age this is something I need to change as it gets me down sometimes. |

Thoughtful comments by everyone re mileages. You are spot on hgreav, with faster pace the miles add up more quickly and don't eat into all the other things to do. As for comparing oneself to others I'm always comparing myself to the runner I used to be and shaking my head at my decline. Been working on changing that attitude but it still bugs me. Being old is sadly inevitable and forty two years ago from when I was in my prime is still so vivid in my mind's eye! 105/100. I've scraped a few more. |

Yes, it’s easy to get disheartened when I compare myslef to someone half my age and half my weight - which I have a bad habit of doing. What I should do is compare myself to the burnt out, overweight, smoking, drinking, sofa sitting, version of me that I very narrowly avoided. A very gentle 5K recovery r/w for me this morning, a bit of bird spotting and some fussing included. 126.5/100 |

I've never been too worried about what others are doing. Was never going to win the Olympics (getting into running in my late 30s didn't help!) So, like gg's excellent post, I admire those doing big mileages and running quickly, but I was only ever trying to get the best for me. And I'm happy that I did that. A challenge and a target is great to have, and to share with others where comparable. But primary thing was always just getting outside, getting a sweat on and heart and lungs and legs working, seeing nice places, fresh air, countryside. Biggest challenge for me now isn't lack of motivation, it's injury prevention! I guess that's an age thing too! G |

Rosehip I've never look at the non runners. Sadly I'm chasing the runner I was who was ways chasing the runner he could have been. Currently 2006 Gobi is still beatable up to 10k , 2007 Gobi is aspirational 5k goal but out of sight above that. I remember 2007 Gobi was chasing 1988 Gobi who he never caught over 5km until 2008. Funny how we motivate ourselves.... |
