DeeGee, honestly, they are okay, but I cannot say they are my favourites. They are okay in that you get to see everyone if it is out-and-back, they are friendly, but personally I much prefer a bigger, city event, ideally abroad. I doubt I will do these smaller events anywhere near as often once I get to the 100, but with the pandemic delaying everything I feel I just want to get it done now, and they serve a purpose from that perspective. I have bigger events lined up for my 99th and 100th, and I will try and get to 98 by February-time, and then enjoy the training and build up to the larger events....if everything goes to plan!

For me, they were very much about "getting it done", they were a suitable location at a suitable time, mainly during the final 18 months of the attempt, from the point I knew I was going to be a dad again and decided that I needed to get the 100 over and done with so I'd be able to spend more time at home with my wife and kids. But then that was part of the problem for me, was that I did have to spend so long away from home every time because there aren't all that many events in this neck of the woods. |

I’ve done nowhere near 100 marathons but quite a few more than zero, and never had an urge to get to 100 except if it’s by organic means. No idea where I’d even get past results from. I found the few multilap or out and back ones I did to be a bit artificial and contrived, it didn’t feel much like a race to me. But of course they are races, and they are the full distance. Maybe they’re just the grit in the oyster. If I did do 100 marathons and they were all multilappers I might question why the hell I’d bothered. Oddly enough I don’t really like big city events much either, I guess I’m very hard to please 😂 |

DeeGee, it is only fairly recently that 3 or 4 companies have turned up in Devon that offer events closer to home. Previously it was a long slog up to MK, or similar, with a hotel needed.

It's different horses for different courses, I think. When I started running lappers it was because I wanted to do a proper multi-day event and Quadzilla in MK absolutely fit the bill, and I had a clubmate who was also running it which made things logistically simpler. Thing is, once I got hooked into Enigma, I realised that I enjoyed meeting up with the crowd that ran there, got on well with Foxy, got on rather too well with others who were there at the time, and it just sort of became a fun way to meet up every so often. And then I found I'd done 50 marathons, so it seemed daft to leave it at that. Maravan is terribly contrived, I've squeezed every inch out of that caravan park, but it's sold more as a social event that just happens to qualify for the 100 club than as an eyeballs-out racing effort, or a beautiful run in the British countryside. I could have just created a four lap relay race and half marathon, but I don't think that would have had quite the buzz around the event that it does. |

Definitely - those events must be a social event with a race combined (or vice versa?) for many.

have a look at Running Events Devon, set up I think by the current 100MC kit manager and wife, who helps out at lots of events. I can't work out who this is, Big_G . Is this Davey Green's Plym Valley Trail series (firstandlast running) or something else? |
