Here's the January roundup. There aren't as many people on the list as last year. Perhaps more Fetchies will set their target to 1,500 miles of running as the year progresses. Anyway. Here goes....

I thought I'd start 2023 by thinking about interest places to visit in the new year. My January roundup details the the top five of the 20 best places to visit in January according to the website "wanderlust dot co dot uk" 😁
In the top spot. Number one for our top 10 runners... Norway. To quote the website... "Make no mistake: Norway is cold in January. The coldest month of all in fact, with temperatures dropping to -2°C or lower, depending on how far north you go. But it's also one of the most beautiful months to visit, if you're after a snowscape unlike any you've seen, or a winter sports adventure like no other. So pack your thickest winter travel gear and get going." 1 Pikelet 231.4 +75.9% 2 Minimag 192.0 +46.0% 3 Jenni-far-far 184.2 +40.1% 4 Hills of Death (HOD) 176.5 +34.2% 5 Nicky Boy 176.0 +33.8% 6 SooWoo 163.6 +24.4% 7 larkim 162.9 +23.9% 8 minardi 158.0 +20.2% 9 Joe1970 157.7 +20.0% 10 slowblonde 150.6 +14.6%
In second place for our next group of runners... Malé, the Maldive Islands. Read any guide to Malé and you'll find out that the capital of the Maldives is densely-populated. But it also has local markets, mosques and museums galore. Malé makes a great base for those hoping to explore the whole archipelago, too. It's easy to transfer to the Atolls for scuba diving, water sports and the chance to see some of the Maldives' most fascinating marine creatures: reef sharks, hammerheads, dolphins, manta rays and on shore, turtles. 11 Werrington Whirlwind 145.2 +10.4% 12 Xstine 145.0 +10.3% 13 Richard-M 144.4 +9.8% 14 melbas 142.4 +8.3% 15 annadav 141.4 +7.6% 16 Will_Uyuni 140.6 +6.9% 17 torey 139.5 +6.1%
Third place on the list goes to... Los Angeles. The guide says that "the home of Hollywood is a surprise in January. It's not warm but mild, with temperatures ranging from around 8°C to 20°C. An ideal time to take on a walking tour of the city, spy celebrities arriving at the Golden Globes in early Jan, or do what LA natives do best: hike. Griffith Park, to the east of the Santa Monica Mountains, is well-suited to low-key hikers. The Charlie Turner Trail is a popular 40-minute ascent, offering a glimpse of the legendary Hollywood sign and glorious panoramas over the city from the top of Mount Hollywood. The reward doesn't end there: Griffith Park Observatory is in the vicinity, and it's a must for stargazers. Next on the list is... Slovenia. It might not immediately come to mind as a winter getaway. It's not sunny, and you can't see the Northern Lights, but you can experience a different side to a country that is traditionally explored in summer. There is Lake Bled and some beautiful national parks that are excellent for skiing!
24 njosmith 131.1 -0.3% 25 jabberknit 130.3 -0.9% 26 Joopsy 130.0 -1.1% 27 faithfulred 124.2 -5.5% 28 NDWDave120.0 -8.8% 29 Pegg119.1 3.5 -9.5% 30 HayleyB 112.5 -14.5%
And last on today's list... Barbados. According to "wanderlust", "...You can't go wrong with a beach in Barbados, but it has more to it than that. For example, Barbados Sailing Week takes place in mid to late January, kicking off a host of sailing events around the Caribbean. Visit at the end of the month meanwhile and you are likely to catch a display that's part of Barbados Horticultural Society's annual Flower and Garden Show. Barbados regularly wins gold at the UK's annual Chelsea Flower Show, so expect to be wowed with rare blooms as well as demonstrations and crafts." 31 TBR (TheBeardRunner) 111.6 -15.2% 32 Lisrun 109.8 -16.5% 33 Nick Turner 109.2 -17.0% 34 Alberon 109.0 -17.1% 35 westmoors 85.7 -34.9% 36 Snoot 81.0 -38.4% 37 billywhizz88 76.7 -41.7% 38 CogNoscensme AHA 73.3 -44.3% 39 Mascott 71.7 -45.5% 40 mr d 56.5 -57.0% 41 MVP 55.1 -58.1% 42 Wilding2004 30.3 -77.0%
So there's my roundup for January. Hope you enjoyed the snippets of info about places to visit in these winter months. Happy running in February!

I liked the Maldives, minardi, but when Mr Ness and I visited there once, many years ago, tourists were discouraged from visiting the capital. According to the tourist info thats changed since then.
