Division 10: No hope of escape?

2:28pm, 30 May 2022
Last Monday, I found myself in 8th place in Division 11 of UTMOST, with some work to do.

My strategy was to improve my Mile and 5k times, to gain the six points I needed to get a promotion spot.

I ran a 6:40 mile on Thursday, after a couple of warm up miles:

It's a nice flat stretch, and I had a bit of a tailwind behind me, but I was surprised to take 27 seconds off my last mile attempt, 19 days earlier. I suppose the earlier one was a little bit off the cuff, whereas this time I set out to do it.

As a result, I picked up enough points to get into the promotion spots :-)

Then on Saturday, I headed to Great Denham parkrun to see whether my 5k time had improved. I set the watch for 7:35/mi, which would have knocked about 40s off my previous time; but I actually managed to average 7:12/mi for the whole thing. Most pleasing of all, the third mile was the quickest :-) (7:15, 7:25, 7:05) I caught up with a bloke who was flagging a bit during the last mile, and basically yelled at him repeatedly to keep going - I could just as easily have been talking to myself. I feel like it helped me keep my effort levels up anyway. And because GD has been measuring a wee bit long for me, I got 22:22 for my benchmark which I was well chuffed with. It gives me a 64.01% WAVA, which is my highest ever ;-)

It also gave me approximately 22 glorious hours atop the D11 UTMOST table, until Soph176 ran a storming half marathon the following day, and wiped the floor with everyone in the division! I still got promoted, and that's all I wanted.

DIVISION 10 bunting
I'm even further down the table this week, in 14th place:

My once points-worthy times have been rendered less so by the inflation of promotion, but I was pleased not to find myself in a relegation spot straight away, so that's something. Let's have a look at what I need to do:

Mile and 5k
At 16 and 18 points respectively, and having only just tried my hand (or should that be my foot) at these, I won't be trying to improve either of these this week.

5 Miles
Once a heavyweight of my points arsenal, this time is ripest for improvement, with a current worth of 5 points. If I can run 3.1 miles at 7:12/mi, I reckon I can try 5 miles at 7:50/mi (predictions based on my 5k time are suggesting I could even go as low as 7:24/mi). That'd take my score up to 14 points. If things go very well, 7:45/mi would give me 16 points, and 7:40/mi would give me 17 points (maybe not worth the beasting, but I'll take it if it comes).

10k
This has stood up reasonably well, currently worth 11 points. If I can tack something on to the end of the 5 mile attempt, and get a sub-50 10k, I could pick up 4 more points. Running the 5 miler at 7:50/mile, and then an extra 1.2 miles at 8:50/mile would just about do it.

10 miles
My time here was a 20 pointer not so long ago, but now I am in the land of the giants :-) But there are ~7 Fetchies all within a 2 minute improvement, so it wouldn't be out of the question to attempt this. But (a) I feel I need to bridge the gap from my new 5k time first, so maybe target 5mi/10k; and (b) it's half term, so I've got a bit less time for longer runs.

Half Marathon
Again, I think it's doable to improve my time, but I want the confidence of knowing that I can put in a suitable 10k first.

Marathon
Lol. Still.

The Plan
Fairly obviously, I think I'll aim for a 5 mile / 10k improvement this week. Combined, they might just net me 9 points, which would put me level with hatstand on 73 points, and I think I'd get the nod based on our head-to-head scores.

There are 4-5 weeks left before the ringers catch me, so it might just be a waiting game. There are not too many people heading south from the divisions above, so it might just be a case of waiting until this division thins out a bit.

Here's a link to the game if you'd like to give it a try. The points system works everything out automatically. All you've got to do is look at the times of the other people in your division, and see if you can beat at least some of them, to improve your standing. We have a lot of ringers in the lower divisions - people who restarted the game to collect the badges - but they'll eventually work their way up the table and out of your way :-) fetcheveryone.com/utmost.php

Division 11: No place left to hide

2:52pm, 23 May 2022
Last Monday, I found myself at the top of UTMOST Division 12 (the previous leaders having gained promotion). Barring any surges from other members of the division, I'd get promoted without any extra effort.

Instead of going for pace this week, I aimed for rest, and kept all my mileage in my lowest two HR zones (sub-70% WHR). This tactic seems to be going well for me, although I'm currently a bit stiff having spent quite a bit of time at the weekend throwing cricket balls at the boy :-)

A great midweek 10k from Soph176 gave me a bit of a jittery moment, pushing me into second place; and iRicey threatened to knock out a ten miler to challenge me further - but luckily I managed to hang on to my promotion spot.

Here I am then, in Division 11, and mid-table again:

What can I do to get promotion? I need to pick up six points to nudge photoset out of the promo spots. Here are my options:

Mile
There's quite a few of us bunched together - which means if I can shave 10s off my 7:07, I'd pick up 4 points. This seems like a good low-risk opportunity for this week. Time to keep an eye on the wind speeds in the weather forecast ;-)

5k
My current 24:12 is the lowest of my scores, and therefore perhaps ripest for improvement. I set it back in April, only a few weeks into my current glut of training. A smidge more than a minute off my time, and I could potentially pick up 6 points. Thirty seconds would be worth 3 points. The wind looks low on Saturday morning :-)

5 Mile & 10k
I lump these together, as they are relatively close in distance. I think I might be up for trying for a sub-8min/mile time for 10k which, if I fall short, leaves me with the chance to hang on til the 5 mile marker. 40 minutes on the nose for 5 miles would pick up 3 points, and if I hang on to the pace for 10k, that's a further 2 points. Not the best return for the effort I think.

10 miles & HM
Lumping these together only because they're both still pretty solid 19 pointers. Not much to be gained by pushing myself at these distances this week.

The Plan
It looks like my best chances are to focus on the mile and 5k times this week. If anyone else in the division makes some moves, things look pretty sticky, but improving my times will only help. Once again, there'll be no speedier people coming down from D10, so even if it takes me two weeks, I think I've got a chance.

Here's the game if you want to sign up:

fetcheveryone.com/utmost.php

You'll start at the bottom, and there's a bit of a logjam of speedy folks - but it'll settle eventually :-)

New HR Analysis

2:11pm, 20 May 2022
I've been working on some new graphs focused on heart rate analysis.

To help look after my legs, I've been putting more emphasis on time spent training at lower intensities. Most of the time, I run with my watch set up like this:

and I try to do most of my running well under 143bpm (that's 70% of my WHR, for HR fans). I find it's best to aim for about 10 beats lower, as this gives me the opportunity to react when my HR starts rising. It's really great for encouraging me to run relaxed and easy. I'm still doing the occasional harder run (every 1-2 weeks) and these seem to have gone very well.

I'm not claiming to have found something revolutionary - here are a bunch of threads where the easy+hard approach is part of the fabric of training:

Heart Rate Thread: fetcheveryone.com/forum/heart-rate-3882/
Hadd Thread: fetcheveryone.com/forum/hadd-s-approach-to-distance-running-31192/
Polarized Training: fetcheveryone.com/forum/polarized-training-55778/

I feel like it's really helped me (along with a decent new pair of shoes), and the last couple of months have been going gangbusters :-)

I've put together some heart rate analysis tools that help illustrate the point. If you train with a HRM, hopefully you'll get a lot out of this page (and do let me know if you get dodgy data, because I've only really tested it on my own data).

Here's the link to try it: fetcheveryone.com/training-analysis-heartrate.php

It'll work best if you make sure that your HR settings are up to date. There's a link at the very top of the analysis page where you can check what you've got set up.

The first graph shows your mileage over the last 12.5 months, broken down by the amount of time spent in each HR zone:

In my case, you can see (a) that the last couple of months have gone great; and (b) that the proportion of my miles in the 'easier' HR zones has massively increased. April and May show 70% and 65% respectively in my two lowest HR zones (grey and cyan). Contrast this with the previous months, where I'd spend lots of my time in the green and yellow zones, just burning through glycogen, not really doing myself much benefit, and injuring myself.

The second bit of the page is a table, which shows your average pace in each of your HR zones:

If you're on a mobile and struggling to read the text when viewing the actual page, try putting your phone on its side. There's a lovely trend across all of my HR zones - my pace at each level of intensity has seen some improvements over the last few months.

The third graph gives you an overall distribution of your HR data over the time period:

I call this an armadillo graph, because it looks a bit like one. To be honest, I'm not quite sure what this graph adds. My recent improvements are obscured within the averages of the whole 12 months. But I guess in time, the shape of the graph changes to reflect your training regime. I'd hope to see the armadillo hump migrate leftwards, to reflect more of my training done at lower intensities. And for a smaller second hump to appear at somewhere around 160+, to reflect the harder runs. See how you go with it.

And the final graph shows you how your average beats per mile figure changes throughout the duration of your run:

I love beats per mile as a metric! The first mile is always a bit of a lottery (today I had to switch my watch to the other wrist to get a good reading), but after that, it's a reasonable measure of how efficiently you are covering the ground. Each coloured line represents a month (put your mouse on the graph). They all trend upwards with distance, just like heart rate does on a long run. But that greeny-blue line toward the bottom is April, and the pink one below that is May - hinting at some nice efficiency improvements for me.

And that's it, for now. I hope you like it.

--
And finally, thanks to everyone who has ordered a cycling jersey. 32 ordered so far, which means that once I've paid for 'em and posted 'em, that's nearly 400 very welcome pounds for the Fetch kitty. Or should that be puppy? Anyway... here's the link if you want one: fetcheveryone.com/shop-preorder-jersey.php

I've been using that Garmin screen for my easy runs for a few years now; if I do tip over into Z3, I try and bring it back down through more controlled breathing and an easier effort rather than a walk break; then I look at how much of my run was in Z2 or lower as a percentage - well, because it'll go up with hills anyway. Easy hills are a challenge ;-)

for example last month, the average pace for zone 5 was slower than zone 4 which isn't right. I'm guessing my watch strap wasn't tight enough on certain runs. Is there anything you can do to eliminate egregious data?
    chunkyblizzard

Initially, I was going to go with Ron Hill Specials, but had difficulties with the cut of their samples. I don't think it's something they do a great deal of... but anyway... I got a tip off from a lovely Fetchie about a company called Granny Gear. For starters, that's a great name for a bike clothing company, don't you think? :-)

Here are the jerseys. I've kept it simple - so they're all full zip, all short sleeve - and they look pretty cool I think. If you want one, please get your order in before the end of May. As usual, if you want one but you're skint, I'm happy to put one aside for you, *IF* you let me know. A quick Darth Mode update

4:40pm, 17 May 2022
Some of the stuff I've had to do to get the dark mode working has had a bit of an impact on the default skin - which is not ideal, because it's the one that the vast, vast majority of Fetchies use.

I'll probably undo some of the changes I've made (to make Darth Mode work), to make sure that the default skin is working as well as can be.

Just letting you know... :-)

Darth Mode! And a few biscuits for the hyperdrive.

4:40pm, 16 May 2022
With thanks to AndyS for the name :-) I hope George Lucas doesn't mind.

If you haven't got a clue what I'm talking about, scroll to the bottom of the page and look for the dropdown box that (probably) says "Default Skin", and change it to "Darth Mode". It's just dark mode really.

I blogged about it on Thursday, and asked folks to let me know if they hit upon any unreadable pages whilst using Darth Mode. The most common thing is where pale yellow links appear on pale grey backgrounds.

As I expected, there were quite a lot of pages that needed nudging - but I have hopefully tackled everything that was raised. I ignored the comments about the pages looking scruffy and jarring because, frankly, some people should have been here long enough to know that's part of the style guide ;-)

Please give it a go, and if you find any unreadable stuff, leave me a comment with a **link** to the page you're looking at.

In other exciting news, I have spent £69.99 of your hard-earned donations on a new battery for my laptop. The current battery can just about manage 45 minutes now before needing to be hooked up to a drip with a couple of custard creams.

I tried to look back at when I last replaced it, and all I can say for certain is that it's been at least 3.5 years. My 2012 Macbook Pro continues to roll back the years. I've just had the lid off to check the battery code, and aside from a bit of fluff, we're all good. I was lucky that I got to keep it in December 2016, but I didn't imagine it'd still be smashing it over five years later.

Have a good rest-of-the-day if you can.

But one change that seems to have happened recently is the splits on a training log entry being pale grey on white in the default skin, and quotations within the threads also pale grey. I don't like that change, and wonder why it's happened?

Division 12: Two hours of pushing broom

1:21pm, 16 May 2022
When you last saw me, I was languishing in 8th place in division 12 of UTMOST:

My strategy this week was two pronged. I figured out that I could pick up some solid points with an improved HM time; and that I could maybe knock a couple of seconds off my mile time, and do enough to get promoted.

I set out on Saturday with the goal of sorting out my HM time. I set my watch up to 8:45/mile pace, which would just about give me enough to claim the 20 pointer. I worked really hard in the first half to make sure I didn't get carried away with the pace. It left me with enough Marmite in the tank to run a fairly even split, and my quickest 5k was in the last three miles. I got a benchmark of 1:53:20, well inside what I needed:

This meant that the updated table looked like this (I'd switched to Darth mode, incase you're wondering):

I was level on points with jamborigg, but when this happens, the tie-break uses your head-to-head times. The image is a bit blurry, but it was 4-2 to jambo.

What's more, I was probably less than half a second away from getting promotion. Down in 14th place, Enigma has the same mile time as me - but I think his 7:07 is rounded up from 7:06XXXX, whereas mine is on the nose. So if I could trim one more second off my mile time, I'd get promotion.

But then I got sensible. The HM was a big effort, and as much as I'm enjoying the challenge, I'm enjoying the running more. So a speedy mile was not something I wanted to chase so soon and risk it all.

And then I got smart too :-)

The three players at the top of the table would get promoted on Monday. Above us in D11, there were only 17 players - so no-one would be coming down. Below in D13, there were no obvious ringers. So when noon rolled around (***allowing for some very quick bug fixes***) I have made it to the top of the table for zero extra effort.

Barring the emergence of three challengers from the ranks of D12, I can have an easy week if I want it, and still get the D11 badge at the end of it.

Looking at my scores, the 10 miler and half marathon are bringing home the bacon substitute :-)

The shorter distances offer most opportunity for improving my tally this week; and the long runs of the last couple of weeks will hopefully have helped me with a bit of mental toughness to dig in over shorter sharper distances.

A sub-23 5k would be worth about six points. A sub-6:58 mile would also give me six points. Or I could combo-up my 5 mile and 10k times. A sub-50 10k would bring three points of its own, plus a further three points via my 5 mile time. I need to figure out what's going on in D11 too, so I can hit the ground running when I get there. Assuming I do :-)

Let's see what happens :-)

Dark Mode: Beta

8:59am, 12 May 2022
If you've noticed a few tremors in page layouts over the last day, it's me! I've been working on making a decent 'Dark Mode' for the site.

It's by no means ready, but I thought I'd make it available anyway :-) If you look in the page footer, it's listed as 'Beta Dark' in the skin options.

Creating a dark mode is pretty easy in principle.

In a perfect scenario, there's one code file that contains colour information for the whole site. In there, you set the background to a dark colour, and the text colour to a light colour. Boom.

But the problem comes when individual pages contain their own colour information. They shouldn't, if you're a purist. But real-world code contains all manner of sticking plasters, bits of string, shortcuts, and whatever else is necessary to make it work. In fact, coders probably have as many words for 'workaround' as eskimos have for snow.

If you'd like to follow it as a work-in-progress, switch to the 'Beta Dark' skin. And if you come across a page with *unusable* content, leave me a comment down below with a link to the page you're having issues with.

For example, as I write this, forum threads are currently black text on white, but any links appear as pale yellow on white = unusable.

Unusability is the first hurdle. After that, I'll be interested in slickness.

Overall, I like the feel of the dark mode. The pale yellow warms the dark background nicely, and bits of red here and there really pop.

PB Potential? Fancy a quickie? ;-)

5:14pm, 10 May 2022
I mean a quick blog, obvs.

I've put together a page that lists the highest ranked 'PB Potential' races at various distances:

fetcheveryone.com/race-reviews-pbpotential.php

There are some lesser-known events in there that have done really well.

Do please have a look - and especially at any races that don't appear to have a 2022 date. If you can spare five mins to research any, and add new listings, that'd be wonderful indeed :-)

There. I told you it was a quick one.

  • What should be done when a race with a fast course, changes it course and is no longer as fast ?
The Aviemore Half appears in your list, but in 2021 it changed from mainly road to a new 95% trail and therefore much slower course. Yet whoever has added last year and this year's listing has just copied the previous event probably not realising, just trying to help. Maybe the old listings up to 2020 need renamed "Aviemore Half - old course" and from 2021 onwards as "Aviemore Half - new course"
Wouldn't like to think someone enterd it for 2022 thinking it was a fast road course based on your new list !

When I do add races, I often go back over previous years to align the race name so it's accurate and consistent throughout, but there's still a lot I find that are not like this. On the 10 mile list we've got Stockport at #35 and #38 simply because the second one is listed with the headline sponsor's name (which can change, so I always leave them out).
    Sigh
    10:09am, 11th May 2022

Division 12: Running Out Of Road?

2:18pm, 9 May 2022
My ten miler on Thursday, and my speedy mile mid-run on Saturday did enough to help propel me into Division 12 of UTMOST :-)

fetcheveryone.com/utmost.php?div=12

I've made some amendments to the tables now, so that:

1) times recorded in the last 28 days are highlighted in gold.
2) each time is clickable, so you can see the associated training entry or race.
3) cobweb icons for times that will expire within the next 28 days.

Here I am in Division 12 - you can see I've been a busy bee, but I'm down in 9th with work to do:

I need to find 9 points (or slightly less if I can steal points from Foxy or jamborigg) to get into the promotion slots.

Mile
If I can turn my 7:07 into 6:57 this week, that'd usurp jennyh, and give me 6 points. A 6:53 would give me 7 points, and would also rob a point from Foxy, which could be handy.

5k
My strongest time from a few weeks ago is now my weakest, contributing 9 points (so it's effectively worth zero, as only my best five scoring performances count). If I improve my mile time, then I'd need to take over a minute off my 5k time to make a difference. It doesn't seem like fertile ground this week, but if I keep knocking out a few fast miles here and there, it'll hopefully put me in good stead for a crack at it soon.

5 Miles & 10k
I think that I can group these together, because they are pretty close in terms of distance (my 5 mile time is 8:12/mile, and the 10k is 8:15/mile). I'm buoyed up by the 10 mile effort I did on Thursday - I think I could maybe aim for something like 8:05/mile for the 10k, and pick up a 5 mile time on the way. Even if I crash and burn on my way to the 10k, the 5 miler gives me a secondary target to hold on for. But it's a tough division. 8:05 pace would only be worth 1 point for my 5 miler, and two points for the 10k.

10 Miler
My time for last week is top of the division :-) So there's no point trying to improve this just now.

Half Marathon
I had hoped to push on from the 10 miler on Thursday to register a half marathon time too. I got to 11 miles in 1:33:49 before running out of energy, so even if I'd 10min/miled for another couple of miles, I could have been looking at another 20 point time in this division. With better fuelling, this feels like a strong contender for earning points this week.

Marathon
Yeah, right :-)

Let's see what happens. At least I won't get relegated, as there are only 17 players in the division!

Thank you everyone!

2:23pm, 6 May 2022
There's no denying that this year is shaping up to be a challenging one for a lot of people financially - what with general inflation, fuel prices, energy bills, NI rises, interest rate rises and the feeling of uncertainty in the aftermath of Covid.

I'd have to be spectacularly unaware not to have wondered how all of this would have an impact on your willingness as a group to continue supporting the site. For anyone who does not know, there's no commercial backing behind FE. It's just me, funded almost entirely by your totally voluntary donations.

If I've noticed anything, it's that the number of people willing to set up a donation seems to have gone a bit quiet. But those of you who already donate have been really wonderfully solid. I've even noticed some folks who have stuck an extra 50p or £1 onto what they started with. I've made a point of NEVER asking anyone who donates to do that, and just to put it in writing, I never will. But I am very grateful to those who have done so.

The money is obviously important, but the goal of the site is far more so, especially now. To be there for everyone. Netflix don't let you carry on watching if you stop your subscription. BP don't let you help yourself to petrol when you need it. strava don't give you access to everything if you stop your premium.

But Fetch does.

If you can't afford to support the site today, that's ok. Those people you're chatting to on the forum; or competing with in a league table; or commenting on your blog. They've got your back. Collectively, we've got you. Together, it's no problem. And maybe tomorrow, when things are better for you, you'll be able to help someone else.

That's my little world vision right there.

Thank you!

Making UTMOST moves :-)

12:36pm, 5 May 2022
My division-leading 10 mile time from last week was only good for 12 points now that I'm in D13:

But I was gee'd up by 6.5 miler last weekend, so I set out today with the goal of improving the 10 mile time by enough to earn me some sweet points.

I figured out that 8:48/mile would be enough to put me just ahead of DocM's 10 mile time and reclaim the 20 pointer. And, that if I could find another 3.1 miles at the end, I could get a 20 pointer for my HM too.

My watch has a virtual partner feature that shows whether I am ahead or behind a set pace. But it's in 5 second increments, so I went with 8:45/mile. I tried to settle into a groove just inside this pace, but I found myself closer to 8:30/mile.

I chose a deliberately simple route - down the canal path, then 1.5 mile laps round West Park. All pancake flat. The first 6.5 miles felt pretty strong, but ended with me having to talk myself into doing a final lap of the park (by pretending I was only going to do a half lap). I knew this would mean 11 miles by the time I got home, so I went with it, and it was ok.

Leaving the park at about 8.4 miles was a bit of an upset to the rhythm I had built in the park - so from there through to 10 miles was a bit of a struggle - but I knew I'd be nicely inside my goal time, and dug in to make sure it'd be solid. The 11th mile was a bit more relaxed - but I'd got pretty warm, and was pretty knackered, so it was tough. All thoughts of pushing on to get the HM were put aside, in favour of a massive glass of water, and about an inch of week-old prawn cocktail Pringles.

I got two badges! One for passing the third checkpoint in the Virtual Challenge:

and the other for going through 14,000 miles of running on Fetch:

But all eyes (both of them in fact) were on the UTMOST table. fetcheveryone.com/utmost.php

In reclaiming the 20 pointer for my 10 miler, I've also stolen points off both DocM and The Running Andy. I hope they don't mind. Ultimately, it's all entirely arbitrary - but isn't that the best thing about sport? That it doesn't *really* matter? No-one is getting smushed. There's always another week, and another chance to shine.

The question is... do I rest on my laurels here, and assume that no big moves will happen from the other challengers? Or do I give my legs a few days off, then throw in a quick mile on Sunday? A sub-7:00 would give me an extra 8 points in the mile column... :-)

Have a great Thursday! Don't forget to vote.

I did my UTMOST :-) (plus new sharing infographic)

8:32am, 3 May 2022
If you read my last blog, you'll know I was planning to reach a promotion spot for Division 14 of UTMOST, before the deadline of midday on Monday. To do that, I was aiming at running a 10k at 8:25/mile, in order to boost my 5 Mile and 10k points.

I did it :-) I managed to do enough to get 19 points for each of those distances, and give me a solid second place.

It took me a couple of miles to get the pace judgement right (and for my body to get used to it, I guess); but then I slowly pulled ahead of my target pace, finishing with an 8:14/mile average for 6.5 miles. You can click this image to see my run:

That's the new infographic that gets generated for all your training entries. You can access it by hitting the blue 'Share' button on any training entry. You may not get a map - it depends on what you've set up in your share settings, which you can access here: fetcheveryone.com/user-settings-visibility.php

But of course, now I'm in Division 13, things are tougher.

fetcheveryone.com/utmost.php?div=13

What was previously a division-topping time for my ten miler now only gives me 12 points; my 5k time is now only worth 13, not 17; and my mile time is now worth 10, not 14.

On the plus side, my newly minted 5 mile and 10k points have stayed fairly strong - so I've got a platform to build on. Taking 25 seconds off my mile time (run during the middle of a parkrun) will pick up 7 points; or at the other end of the scale, three minutes off my 10 mile time will see me right.

Let's see what happens :-)
