Strangely Bleak House is my favourite Dickens, Columba. Not that I'm a huge fan.
I'm still saying nothing about MotF ... Too many lasting impressions - although perhaps it would/will be different nearly forty years later...

Thought I'd like to join in. I have TMOTF packed away in the attic from my Uni days but can't get at it. Didn't want to buy another so thought I'd read it for free. This led to me buying a tablet! Still the book is free from Gutenberg and I shall be able to get all the classics free. Anyway that's how I justified spending so much money!

That's interesting, Herald Angel. Didn't you find yourself bewildered by all the characters, at least the first time you read it?
I have been wondering what Dickens himself feels about the charming but totally feckless Harold Skimpole. Mr. Jarndyce puts up with HS happily, pays his debts and excuses him everything on the grounds that he's "a child", so I thought maybe this reflects Dickens's own attitude, - but am just beginning to get hints that it doesn't.

He's appalling! Apparently it was a fairly accurate portrait of Leigh Hunt - so he must have been appalling too. I think it's Leigh Hunt - I haven't checked.

hmm... I had just decided to make Bleak House my first foray into Dickens... although not sure when that will be as it's so long that I will need to free up several of my reading "slots" before starting it I'll probably not start MOTF just yet either, as I'm currently nearing the end of Pride and Prejudice, and feel like I need to read something a bit more modern next

Hello! I'm going to join in this year - will be good to read things I might not go for otherwise.
