Not sure exact temp, but def in the 70s and the sun slowly setting and just so many people out and about enjoying the nice evening ugh I loved. Spring in philly can be goated goddamn. Bartram's was such a nice vibe, and then running around neighborhoods after was a different but still very nice vibe, seeing people out on their porches and stoops. Also, stopped at end of bartram's, and on little footbridge over train tracks that was new to me, but those were the only two times I had to stop, didn't stop for cars once! Add a comment

Ran 2:35, 2:32, 2:30, 2:28, 2:25, 2:22, and then 32.0, 31.0. Really good stuff with Matthew and David. Matthew led all except last 800 and cut down really nicely. A lot of them were positive splits, but still, good progression overall. Quite light, but am sort of peaking? And race is in only 3 days so wanted to err on the side of less rather than more. 2:25 felt super good and that was a moment to be like 'running fast feels good, probably good to stop while I'm ahead'. And then 2:22 was a little hard, but still not bad. 200s were solid, not biggest grind but pretty hard. All in all quite happy with this, good confidence booster going into widener 5k. Add a comment

14:50.79 at the 2024 Paul Donahue Invitational at Widener University. Hell yeah! Second in heat, 13th overall. Came thru k in 3:01, 1600 in 4:49, 3k in 9:04, 3.4 k in 10:06, 4.2k in 12:38, and then closed 69-63. Great fucking race. Was kinda kicking myself for putting seed time at 15:05 and thus being at front of second heat in terms of seed times, but then also figured even if no one was running 72s at start, definitely could sit on people running 73s and close hard which was probably better race strategy for me anyway than hanging on to 71/72s from the gun. Got out pretty well, little bit of jumbling but came thru 400 in like 70/71 and in fourth. Then spent a couple laps getting shuffled back, but was running pretty consistent 72s, slowly losing 15:00 pace but didn't really care. Was chilling for a while, just counting off laps feeling pretty good. Around 3k, or maybe a little before people started trying to get by me again, which was weird bc we were running 72s basically, I was happy with coming thru 3k in 9:04. So that was a little annoying, tried to stay on the rail as much as possible tho and stay out of trouble. Knew I was running pace, didn't need to move yet and waste energy getting around people. Was able to get by a couple people on the inside, but at some point did need to get around people, and did swing out a bit with either 3 or 4 laps to go. With 4 laps to go, was still 4s off, so knew I needed 71s to get under 15, which I felt was pretty reasonable. Kept wanting to push it more and pass people and get to front, but stayed in about fourth because we were running 71s and I knew I needed to be patient. With 800 to go, had just ran two 71s and so at that point pretty much knew I'd be under but the 71s didn't feel easy so I was a little worried. Moved around 2nd & 3rd into second place behind leader, once again kind of wanted to start really pushing but told myself to bide my time, not get overexcited. And that lap was a 69, because I remember looking at clock and thinking 'oh sweet only need a 72 now to get under' and so def was smart to not try and go around. Haverford kid and I were still picking it up, I was planning on trying to get around him with like 150 to go. Kept increasing pace but wasn't quite able to get around him, and tried like 95% on homestretch but maybe not quite 100%, but that was because it wasn't like I really wanted to win heat 2 of the paul donahue 5k lol. Watched the clock in the 14:40s and was like 'oh shit' and crossed the line in 14:50 right behind haverford kid. Guess I am quite fit after all. Also goddamn I love track racing, and I do feel like 3k/5k/maybe 8k really is my sweet spot, which is bad for Broad Street but oh well, I'm just gonna go try and have fun with it. 5k is just such a fun race distance, and try racing is so good when you feel good. I love to kick, and even with shorter distance road races, the kick just isn't as important which is a bummer. Talked a lot abt running with frank on wu/cd, and recent thoughts combined with this race makes me think I really am gonna try and give getting real fit a go this next year. But that means I gotta get on good aerobic shape, bc for club cross in the fall that's 10k and xc, so I can't really on my footspeed unfortunately. Ugh racing is so good when it's good. Sucks that track racing just isn't as viable a thing after college, roads is really where it's at. Oh well! Enjoyed this nonetheless!

For some reason watch reset itself and deleted all prior activities and this wasn't uploaded in time. Did a loop up to fairmount park, thru trolley trail, across strawberry mansion bridge, down boxer's trail to srt, and then home via ssb. Kinda becoming classic loop with variation. Didn't feel great, but didn't feel terrible either considering post-race. 50 miles on the week, which I'll just shoot for that much again next week, which maybe I should run more bc already not running a ton and broad street is 10 miles, but whatever I want to taper. Last long run of my spring season, which is crazy. Next time I do a run of this length, it'll be somewhere in June!

2) 3mi - 22:51(7:36/mi) 458cal 83/92rpm 7.89/9.54mph Accidentally recorded this as a walk lol so that's why there's a 5 mile split and a 3 mile split. Anyway, run from lloyd so first 6 could be with omar, then was just gonna do mile out and back but then ran into will newman so ran with them for a bit which was nice. Beautiful evening out on the river, ugh philly is so pretty in the springtime. Good to run with omar, but not quite the friendship breakthrough I was perhaps hoping for. Legs felt pretty good. Thought about doing strides, but did I? Haha no. Add a comment

Both was busy last night and wanted to do longer aerobic effort before broad street, as I certainly have the fitness to run fast but I worry about my mental fortitude with longer efforts, so 5 mile tempo it was. Figured 5 was the sweet spot of feeling like a bit of an effort, but not being so long as to effect my race next sunday. Anyway, this was good! Headwind on way out kind of sucked, but mostly felt pretty good, and then last couple miles were hard but good. Really nice sunny day on the srt too, which helped for sure. Has some caffeine in my stomach as well. It's funny, because 5 @ 5:22/mile doesn't seem all that fast to me, and certainly I just didn't do that many long continuous tempos senior year of college when I was in really good shape, and certainly not flat long tempos, but still the 26:50 5 mile split is my third fastest in training, which I guess means I can't really view this as anything but a success. Also 16:34 5k is 10th fastest in training, which ain't too bad either. Last workout that's actually a bit of a grind before broad street. 11 days out! Add a comment

Not a huge new run, just using 58 st to connect cobbs creek & bartrams and have it be only 8. Very few stops, ~90s of stoppage time and probably a min of that was a pee break in cobbs creek. Partly due to route, but partly just me getting lucky tho. Still, good shit. Add a comment

Was shooting for 10k, 5k, 3k effort, but paces were a little all over the place. Definitely didn't feel the smoothest on this, but was pretty tired from past couple days and overcast weather wasn't really motivating me too much. Still got some decent work in, which given I'm 8 days out from broad street, is all I really care about. Wednesday was last workout that was any kind of fitness check for me. Add a comment

Bartram's was really nice, did a good job of chilling me out after stressful day at work, but then kept hitting reds on 49th and that kinda stressed me out again. It does suck that city running isn't nearly as conducive to de-stressing me as running was in college or high school. Alas. 50 miles on the week, further down next week. Add a comment

With jason, kevin, and andrew. Good little squad. Pacing wasn't always the smoothest, and ran the last 400 too fast which I was leading, but as jason said 'the vibes were right'. Quite an easy workout on paper, but didn't feel super easy, probably can blame being at work for ten hours. Still made it thru without like struggling, tho first 400 did feel rough. Cobbs creek was very nice, think this would be a great 9ish mile run with actually getting into haddington woods, as at 8 I just had to stop at market twice in the span of a couple minutes. Also someday maybe I'll get out to morris park. Oh also this was my first run in the cloudmonsters I got for working the freaking on booth at penn relays. Pretty solid shoe, will probably use it was my daily trainer, tho after this pair is gone may go back to rincons as I'm not sure I want to be spending $180 on a daily trainer when I can get rincons for $125. Little west philly group run with declan, armie, and kevin. Ran by dylan zuch twice too lmao. So nice to run with people omg, especially with a little group of people all close-ish to my age whom I all know decently well omg. Such good vibes. Great weather out too, like 60 degrees, a little humid, a little windy, pretty cloudy but not totally overcast. Lots of stoppage time, but oh well. Sad that declan is leaving so soon, and armie will be gone for summer but some discussion of making a west gc and maybe 7am weekday summer runs, which man would I be down for. Man is running with people fun. 2 days till broad, legs felt good, discussion of top philadelphian as there's no one who's the pre-eminent candidate, tho dorsey & bo are probably the favorites over me/declan/kevin/dylan. Little out and back on the srt as my pre-race. Funny how leading up to Widener 5k and then right after, I was all kinda like 'eh' about broad street, but then Declan telling me on tuesday we were going out at 5:05 pace, and then yesterday saying Dorsey & Bo are probably the favorites for top philadelphian, has me caring a lot now. Spent the first ten minutes of this being really pissed at the wind & rain bc despite it being 60 out I was cold and annoyed. But both warmed up, and chilled out when I got onto the srt. Too much coffee, not enough food in stomach making me angry as usual. Pretty unlikely I beat dorsey or bo, and even if I do there's a chance Declan or matthew dreiban or maybe dylan zuch beat me, or someone else entirely with a philly address we don't know of. So very low chance of top philadelphia, but still exciting to be a little bit in the mix. Also just the idea of running 50:xx for 10 miles is scary and exciting, but everyone's telling me it's a very fast course. Anyhow, we will find out soon enough. Hell yeah. Actually psyched with how this went. Before tuesday thought the goal would be breaking 52, but even that I was kinda like uh? But then Declan told me we were going out in 5:05s, and gradually that went from being 'okay sure declan but we're gonna positive split but maybe for like 51:30' in my mind to 'okay maybe I can break 51'. Weather was great, around 50 with a slight drizzle at times. Course is also ridiculously fast between being net downhill and not turns besides city hall, so probably almost as fast as a track but without the monotony. Start was a little hectic but not too bad, by like 800 in was kinda trailing a big pack including declan and bo. As we approached the mile I was like 'okay I gotta catch them' so surged a little, and seeing 5:00 actually didn't really scare me, I was just like okay. Made it through mile 2 and then 3, and by fourth mile I was starting to know all the cross streets and recognize the scenery which was really nice. Was clicking off consistent 5:05s and feeling pretty alright doing it. Little bit of shuffling around in my pack but not a ton. Around mile 5, before city hall, one guy from our pack went, and I then went to the front of the pack for a bit before city hall but that guy was gone. Was really nice mentally after having gotten by city hall, because was over halfway through the race and got the only turns done. Had gotten shuffled back a bit in pack, but around mile 6 went to the front again and clearly hammered mile 7 a bit. At this point, dorsey and another guy in the front looked like they might've been coming back. Still had declan and another guy with me at mile 7, but then last 2.5 or so miles were solo. Was kind of closing on dorsey in front of me, but not by much. Still just kept up my grind tho, it was different from 3k-10k races I've done, in that I feel like it never got super hard physically, it was just staying on the edge of the knife after so long. At some point kinda became clear I wasn't catching dorsey, and wasn't really speeding up either with the mile spits, so tried to just keep running hard to get under 51 and for the sake of running hard. As evidenced by splits, did not have a close at all the last mile, but that's cool. 6s spread in mile splits for the whole thing is crazy, and pretty much even first 5miles and second 5miles, which is cool too. Happy because had a good race and ran well, and also think maybe this means I can be good at longer distances, and maybe 3k-5k-8k isn't my best spot, as I feel like postgrad it's better to be good 10k and up. Ran ~50-51, 49, 1:28, 47.7, 28.6, 1:28, 48.1, 26.4. Hell yeah. Body felt atrocious last night and this morning, thought I was sick, maybe I was a bit, but also maybe was just fatigued and really hungry idk. Was contemplating taking today off, and then was like 'eh I'll jog a bit' and then felt pretty okay and so decided to just send it. Legs felt atrocious on warmup, pretty bad on those first couple 300s, and they were a rude awakening. But then that first 500 was nice bc it was a little slower, and generally got a ton of rest on this and was fun to just turnover on the 3s and 2s. Also was in spikes and it is easy to run fast if spiked up and getting lots of rest. Idk how helpful for my mile next friday, but probably the only time I'll get on a track before then, so. Was fun as hell to rip that last 2. Overall legs loosened up quite nicely. We will see how they feel tomorrow though, I do worry for them a bit. Add a comment

Bartrams was so nice, overcast out but everything's so green it doesn't really matter, and it was pretty humid too giving a nice late spring/early summer energy. And then legs felt pretty tired on the warmup, so not a huge surprise this little workout was a rough one, but still yikes. 5:30s for tempo in only 5min intervals with 75s jog rest in between. That is not too good. Felt like shit too. Good news is it doesn't really matter, hopefully legs will be back to feeling good by tuesday for last little tuneup before my mile, but I know I am aerobically fit so lack of running particularly quick today does not worry me on that front. 1 week until end of my spring racing season!
