cehstone Non-stop rain until ten minutes before the race and then it stops and over a thousand people are running down the side of the hill, slipping and sliding and falling in the mud. Lots of shouted apologies as everybody bumps into somebody. We get to the bottom by the Dove and having done it last year I know that its pretty smooth at the bottom of the river so I leap half the flow and wouldn't have felt the cold if someone hadn't been slow getting out the other side. Lots of shouts and laughter from the runners and the spectators by the side, hands in their pockets, cause its still quite cold. I'm beginning to warm up with the running along beside the river, up over the fields. My breathing isn't too good because as you pointed out I have a bit of a cold and cough but keep going overtaking a few on the downhills. There are a few rivers that weren't there yesterday because of at least 3 hours solid rain before hand. We have all got into it now and plunge through flowing water, foot deep mud. A few people have to stop to tie their shoes which have been sucked off by the mud. There's an almost vertical cliff to climb and then its uphill for half a mile which I'm running very slowly, but by now some people have reached the end of their fitness and have slowed to a walk, so I can content myself that I am overtaking people. Back along the side of the Dove but its sometimes easier to run in the Dove rather than on the jagged rock/trail at the edge. Still overtaking a few but get back to the stepping stones nd now its back up the hill to the finish. About forty five minutes and I've come 411 out of over a thousand. I should have sprinted the last 100 yards and got into the top 300s. But I always think that. Its a great run, lots of laughter and good spirits. No prizes or t-shirts at this one. Its just for fun. Back to Nottingham before the weather changes again. The sun's come out.
