Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

I was impressed enough by the architecture on your photo.

But ...

"Angram and Scar House were built to supply water to the Bradford area of West Yorkshire. Water from here is transferred to Chellow Heights via the Nidd Aqueduct using only gravity and no pumping."

What?!

I hadn't thought of that bit! Chellow Heights ain't.

However it gets there, what a wonderful feat of engineering.

The Victorians were amazing engineers. There are reservoirs, conduits, culverts, aqueducts etc all west of Bradford

Scar House was also going to be my next guess. Still not been up there yet despite having cycled to How Stean Gorge several times.

I visited Lake Vyrnwy a couple of years ago and was captivated by something so massive and seemingly so far from Liverpool was built to supply water there. I guess we just take it for granted that clean water comes out of our taps when the Victorians were responsible for so much of it.

Ran the half Marathon there several times in the distant past. Turning at 6+ miles and taking the 'homeward' bank gives an idea of the sheer size.

I did the LV HM one year. It was pouring with rain so quite difficult to appreciate the beauty!

Also have memories of driving through the Elan Valley as a child, the roads high up along the sides felt quite precarious. Would they have been to supply Birmingham?

Elan Valley was for Birmingham yes. I had a weekend there flyfishing with a friend back in the 90's. The dams might be man made but it's a stunning wild environment and the trout not large but highly memorable
