He's home! Full of bounce and quite chipper despite the vet assuring me he'd be subdued after the anaesthetic and methadone. Poor little lad's got a ruptured ear drum. No idea how or when it happened. The vet's cleaned it all and now it's just a case of letting time heal, along with some painkillers/anti-inflammatories. Back for a check up in 3 weeks.
