Roberto: It won’t be dominance, simply showing you he doesn’t like being handled like that. If you keep doing it then it’ll be likely it’ll progress to a growl, snap etc.

It all comes from stresses or threats.

Yeah, I try to avoid it whenever I can, he likes his independence on an evening so I never try to pick him up then. But had to get him away from the tree unfortunately as he wouldn't leave it, even for ham and cheese. He has pretty much ignored it for the last 2 weeks. So we are now making it inaccessible.

we have a new dinner time routine for the last week or so where we have an intense play session, toilet and dinner, then Chester pops in his crate for an "enforced" nap while we eat. he falls asleep pretty quickly and then we get peace while we eat and don't have to worry about him begging for food. we enjoy our dinner and then when he wakes up again we can play more. it's working really well.

We feed Skye when we eat, and she used to come and bother us after dinner wanting to play, but she's improving loads and just lies under the sideboard most of the time now... or hovers & hoovers under Squeak's seat.

If we sit at the table, arlo goes in his crate with his snuffle mat. If we have trays and eat on the sofa, he gets his kong/dentastix/carrot. He will come and sit in front of us if he finishes before us but has only made a grab at food a couple of times. Used to cry and bark and bite his crate but took his bed out and replaced with blankets and now has his snufflemat and then just lies down and sleeps. |

My two get sent through to the utility room at meal times. Even though she knows not to mooch or beg, Stella’s not a great dining companion as drooling Labradors are quite off putting. They both do a good job of clearing any floor crumbs after we’ve eaten, although Cleo (Whippet) licked up a load of spilled chilli powder earlier in the week when my back was turned. Surprised there weren’t any gastric consequences! |

Cookie and Phoebe stare at us. They (Phoebe) used to invade personal space. Ignoring the behaviour worked, although Phoebe does sit in the kitchen waiting when any food is being made.

And Pet Plan is about to come in handy again. We noticed a bit of stiffness in Phoebe around June. Started her on YuMOVE and it seemed to help. It got worse and around September she started on Onsior. Suspected arthritis or spondylitis. An X-ray 4 weeks ago revealed nothing other than healthy looking joints. She’s still stiff and sore, intermittently, and the painkillers don’t seem to be having full effect. We’ve been referred to a specialist and given extra pain killers for her. Hopefully some extra drugs might perk her up before she sees the specialist. |
