Wobbling
Thanks all, we won’t let him upstairs on Saturday. We’be bought a stair gate for nights with the hope that during the day when we’re home we’ll be able to deter him from exploring upstairs.

Wombling Plodder (Welsh Womble)
Hi Wobbling, have the rescue been able to tell you much about his background and his fears? Depending on his past there may be a few obstacles but start off as you mean to go on but be prepared to be patient. Rescue dogs are very rewarding and I wouldn’t be without my special girl.
My big fur baby wouldn’t come in the house for the first day but we managed to persuade her to come in via the patio doors.
We are very fortunate that Nala has not ventured up the stairs (or into the galley kitchen) as she has an issue with enclosed spaces - I have been known to sleep on the sofa during storms and fireworks.
Enjoy 🐾

In agreement here with the "start as you mean to go on".
Consistency is the key, and this applies to all humans in the household, dogs are past masters at playing one off against the other!
I had a crate for the first time in 9 dogs with Indi and I really wish I had known about them before, i found that a bit of time on their own is invaluable for both handler and dog.
I think your "in the hope that" comment needs firming up!!!!! Either he is allowed upstairs or not.
I think we are all going to enjoy your new dog experience

I think Rory (never lived in a house before) had firmly installed himself on the bed within about 5 minutes of arriving, so I’d say if you don’t want him upstairs make it clear right from the start that it is Not An Option (plus I am soft and once I saw my poor little rescue puppy all curled up on the duvet no way was I going to be able to evict him )

Agree with others start as you mean to go and stay strong. We got Ernie and he was not going to be allowed upstairs or on the furniture. He had separation anxiety and would whine and cry every time I went upstairs without him and then started trying to jump the stair gate which risked injury. I gave in and he now has full run of the house. I must say I like his presence in my office whilst I work (even though he likes to settle right under my feet). Not so keen on finding him on my bed when he's been for a muddy/wet walk.

I have a big cover I put on my bed every day, Indi knows he has to wait till it goes on before he can jump on my bed.......... except in the morning when he comes to wake me up obviously.......
