Mrs J is the saint. The Miss Js and I just get dragged along for the ride.
Reflecting on where our rescues didn't work out: - We didn't hear anything else about Sam the greyhound, but we suspect if he were in a setting where he could get plenty of attention and be 'top dog' he could be okay. But we couldn't provide that setting. - We followed the progress of Sam the lab remotely. He returned to a rescue centre, and had his back leg amputed (although it looks like the other back leg doesn't work that well). It seems as though he is still problematical around other dogs, and incontinent. So I'm not convinced he could/would ever be homed as a family pet - Luna and Lexi are a success story. They were so scared when they arrived that they didn't eat or drink for two days. Luna was the less confident, and it was a journey from being completely withdrawn, to either snarling or peeing herself when I went near her, to plucking up the courage to hop up onto the sofa next to me (then hopping off very quickly). We made (with the rescue) the decision to split them up, and Luna was rehomed first. From the videos we have been sent, she seems to have settled really well - although I suspect she will never go out for a walk. Once Luna had gone, Lexi made more progress. She eventually liked to be stroked, on her terms, and would paw for attention. Over the course of many weeks, and much of her favourite cooked chicken, we tempted her out of the family room and eventually upstairs. We finally managed to get a collar on her (again, after much chicken treats), and took her round the garden on a lead a couple of times. Again, some of the video we have been sent shows that she has settled in to her new home really well. So although it was hard work, we actually did our job - eventually - in helping them transition from petrified street dogs to happy pets.
Older daughter is studying to become a vet. I'm dreading her qualifying, because I know Mrs J is going to be a sucker for every two legged blind animal that needs a home.

That is a lovely lots of stories, EdJ.
Baroness - poor you and Wanda. Bristol is full of Staffies and various other bull breeds. I do remember a time when the main local rescue centre was full of them and some people were nervous of the breed. That's not the case so much now and responsible owners are very much in evidence. At Dogs Trust Training School we get quite a few pups, adolescents and rescues. Their good natures and the kindness and sense of responsibility from the owners help to dispel the "devil dog" reputation round these parts.

Just a thought from me W, when you get a new dog its really helpful to be able to do lots of different things with them and that would not be easy at present. As others have said rescue dogs come with experiences that you cant know about and it takes time and patience for you to learn about their personalities and for them to readjust to new live experiences and expectations. Underlying that though are the breed characteristics which will always be there so think carefully about what you want your companion to be like and choose wisely. (I've had 7 rescues and write from experience)

We are just home from an evening at the emergency vets, which is not our local vets but in the nearest town about 25 minutes away. All is well (hopefully) although we have a somewhat groggy Wanda and BaronBR's wallet is (metaphorically speaking as it's cards only) considerably lighter.
A traumatic evening for us all but will give you the details tomorrow - possibly in a buddies only blog.
Lets just say it involved a dark chocolate Easter egg.........
