Be aware Molesy that as their name suggests, Springers can jump surprisingly high if they want to (I was brought up with Welsh Springers - gorgeous dogs )

Thanks LD, at this stage I'm more concerned about a small pup wriggling through holes. If he turns into an escape artist when he's bigger we may have to re-think things.

Maybe start with quite high fence posts then at least as he/she grows you wont have to start again you can just add an extra layer of stock fencing.... that is of course unless the dog can climb it. I suggest lots of training to demonstrate where their garden ends.

I need to sort out a good trainer, I'd rather start off on the right foot rather than try and correct stuff later.

Also Rory (Brittany-used-to-be-a-Spaniel) is *very* interested in the bottom of fences, and can flatten himself and squeeze under them to an extraordinary extent, so you might need to make sure your chicken wire is long enough and tough enough.

Yes - puppy Charlie was a great digger and did manage to tunnel under the fence once! We had to cover it with chicken wire and bury a few inches into the soil.

Very good point about starting as you mean to go on.
If you were to ask for one word of advice.... (which of course you didn't but no one gets anywhere from holding back) mine would be "consistency"

If I'm honest I think my biggest concern is my wife and son not recognising that need.

I agree. Start training from day one and be consistent. We made so many mistakes with Ernie. I would do things differently if I got another.

Couldn’t agree more. Consistency is key. And no human food from day 1, learn to ignore those big brown eyes
