I saw a tiny bit, but it was near the end so I decided to leave it and watch the whole thing on iPlayer. Did they have a series a bit like this on a while ago? I seem to remember an air steward who wanted a GSD and a family with 3 kids who wanted a puppy they could dress up and carry around.

I got hacked off with a woman on last week's programme who clearly didn't have a scooby and was wanting the dog to follow commands without seeming to actually train the dog at all. Also she was very exasperated by what appeared to be normal puppy behaviour. Also a lady who struggled with her little handbag dog thing and then by the end of the programme was going to get another!!!!

I will have to watch this next instalment.

Maz _ I think I saw that one too. It's amazing how many dog programmes I have watched in the last year or so. It all reassures me that I am not completely clueless.

I have to say one of the best things about going to classes is meeting other owners! (Not necessarily clueless, but just seeing that they have problems too).

I'm confident you're going out for tea. Not a fag, definitely not a fag.

Mazlin - I've been doing food research for the last few weeks. It's a bit overwhelming! I'm trying to find a cure to Charlie's itching problem. The vet has suggested food allergies and told me the main culprits - grain, dairy, beef and poultry. I was horrified to discover that Charlie's food - expensive, glitzy packaged, fancy named Royal Canin - is full of grains and poultry "derivatives". Why do vets class it as a good quality food?

I'd like to raw feed but it just isn't practical so I'm looking for a good qualty kibble. I found one called Aatu which is 80% meat (or fish) and 20% veggies. Premium food, really expensive though. I'm about to try Arden Grange, looks reasonable and a third of the price of Aatu.

Then I just need to stop MrAtC slipping him bits of toast.

Blotts Mate
Food intolerances aren't hugely common and the only way to diagnose them is to feed a restricted elimination diet with a novel protein & carbohydrate source for up to 8 weeks. Swapping to a different kibble without establishing whether there is a food related component to itching is hit & miss. This elimination diet excludes all processed doggy treats/stolen cat food & human food & most owners struggle to perform them successfully!

Alice have you tried something as simple as adding cod liver oil to Charlie's food (whatever it is) to see if that helps? I knew someone who reckoned that cured his dog's itchy skin.

I haven't, LD. Worth considering. I've also been advised that coconut oil may help.

Blotts Mate is completely correct, of course. The vet mentioned blood tests etc to establish what/if there was an allergen but it was SO expensive she suggested instead trying a different kibble - stressing the importance of no treats apart from more of the kibble. The idea of a strict monitored elimination diet was muted but I got the impression she didn't think his itching was severe enough to be worth the hassle.
