I should think cod liver oil is a lot cheaper than coconut oil!

Dead right :-) Coconut oil seems to be the magic cure-all at the moment. And I'm not sure if I'm supposed to rub it on his skin or make him eat it...

I've been using allaboutdogfood.co.uk which ranks foods based on various factors. You can sort by price. I've been surprised by how many 'premium' foods don't rank well. We are really struggling to find a food that Ernie loves that also agrees with his seemingly delicate stomach. Millie's Wolfheart is our current try.

You can filter by ingredients as well I think.

Think that's the site I've always used - is it still independent?
It's a great resource.

Rory and I just had a really interesting one to one training session - he REALLY didn't like it when the trainer tried to take him round to the other side of a couple of jumps (no more than 5 meters), then shot straight back to me, which has never, ever happened (he generally totally ignores me outside). Then we sat in the middle of the paddock for 20 minutes while he did circles around us, but came over every so often to get treats (again, he's very rarely relaxed enough to eat outside). So all I need to do is find a fenced in field, and take up residence in the middle of it for about a fortnight, until he calms down a bit and stops losing his mind every time a bird comes along...

I found the occasional one to one session with a trainer a huge help especially in my understanding and confidence. Rory has clearly bonded well with you, the rest will come, sounds like he is currently being a dog. :)

Maz, if he was a street dog do you think chasing birds served a survival function? Or is it just that noone has trained it out of him? Ernie is similar age I think and only just beginning to have some impulse control.

He's currently being a teenage dog :-)

(He also currently seems to think he's a terrier -digging a big hole in the garden.)

I think part of it is breed (quite a few people have said to me 'oh he's a typical Brittany, they're all obsessed with birds'), part of it is age, part of it is that he possibly came from a hunting kennel, and as you say HP I'm sure part of it is from being a street dog. He's also very, very anxious, and a bit obsessive generally (hardly surprising).

On the other hand, at the moment he's pretty happy chewing on a disgusting bone he buried God knows when and has just dug up :-)
