I do feel there are the ones that are 'straightforward' e.g. Crow Road, Complicity and those that are harder work like Song of Stone and Walking on Glass. I saw a play version of Wasp Factory and reread it. I enjoyed it then in a totally different way.

I didn't get on much with Song of Stone when I first read it, but my second read I found it much more enjoyable. I've found that a bit with some of his non-M 'allegorical ones'.

Yes, me too. Song of Stone was so brutal that I'm a bit scared to go back to it.
I didn't see the point of Dead Air.

I think he was trying to 'say something' in the wake of 9/11 but the basic story is hard-men gangsters so it didn't sit well. It's not my fave though it's entertaining enough.
I think I'm going to have to read The Crow Road again. I *love* that book.

Nice list McG. I love Banks! I've read the Culture series and Wasp Factory. I would say Excession is my favourite.

I think I must only like the “straightforward” ones!

Yes it (DA) was obviously an answer of sorts to 9/11.

I think I have read all the fiction ones except maybe the last, Song of Stone was just a nothing book, he'd run out of ideas, no idea what he was saying, fair enough by then though.
Dead Air was poor too.
