Some kit will be usable for 10 years! The £100 challenge is a good one, but if you express it as £50 per year, running looks even cheaper! :-) G

Are Skechers good for running? I've never taken them seriously as I thought they were "fashion" trainers but maybe I am missing a trick (and a bargain).

There used to be a Fetchie Hellen who was a very fine runner indeed and was a brand ambassador (or similar) for Skechers.

That's all very well, Chris, but are they any good for distinctly mediocre runners? 😆

I'm lucky, I can run in any old daps! I've done the same 500 miles in 19.99 trainers out of Decathlon or bargain bucket at JD Sports! Define "good"!

Warm, wind or waterproof cold weather jacket, base layers that wick, comfortable socks etc matter more than trainers for me. Lucky, I guess. :-) G

Has anyone used Desigual running trainers? It's one of my favourite brands. I got a pair of fashion trainers from them years ago that I loved to death but now they sell trainers that are advertised as "running sneakers". They are also advertised as more sustainable with partially recycled materials (though I don't know how much is recycled.) They are very, very cute. I might not run a marathon in them but for the sale price of 60 quid I'm very tempted to give them ago (which failing, I will just wear them to work!).

Any experience out there?

I don't know, but on spotting this thread, iirc pedroscalls ran (runs?) in Skechers and got phenomenal mileage out of them. They do have specific running shoes, including ultra-light ones, in their head-swivelling large range.

I was given Skechers "Go Run" as part of the MK Marathon sponsorship in 2013 & still wear them on occassion - I would never have bought therm but very impressed.

My latest shoe purchase was black Friday £63 Nike Pegasus £40 (I actaully bought 2 pairs as they are usually £119.99) Salomon Shorts for £39 & karrimor socks 4 for £6, I never buy tops as have race ones for "Free" - i know I could buy cheaper shorts but don't like a red raw ball sack so worth the money.

Increasing prices (looking at you super-shoes) may be making running a little less accessible than it used to be. There are some great budget options like Decathlon which sell T-shirts for £2.99. I think you can get some kit you would want to wear for £100 or less - possibly some brand names and less funky colours.

So what can you do? If you were choosing for yourself or pal new to the sport?
