Increasing prices (looking at you super-shoes) may be making running a little less accessible than it used to be. There are some great budget options like Decathlon which sell T-shirts for £2.99. I think you can get some kit you would want to wear for £100 or less - possibly some brand names and less funky colours.

So what can you do? If you were choosing for yourself or pal new to the sport?

I used shopping sites (others available):

asos.com

decathlon.co.uk

keller-sports.co.uk

sportsshoes.com

wiggle.co.uk

I constrained my search to using small & average shoe size to exclude super deals at the more niche sizes.

I get nearly all my running clothes second hand. You can easily get top, shorts, and leggins for 15 quid plus another 10 for a jacket. Up here, our sports shop often gives old stock to our Red Cross and I've picked up ALE bike bibshorts and tops for pocket money.

Trainers I buy new and lower end Asics which work for me (about 80 quid but I stock up in sales or at Outlet). I'd recommend Aldi or Decathlon for a newbie who just wants to see if it is for them; but if you buy dark trainers and give up on running (or when they get old), you can always wear them around as normal shoes.

Sports bras are expensive and need to be good, well-fitting and new. Best if you can get sales assistant to help with fit but easily forty quid.

(Must fess up to having splashed on Nike vaporflies but they live in a bag and come out only for rare races.)

I have realised by collages look like banner adverts, so I suspect might get tuned out / lost context

I recommend Decathlon and Aldi to our beginners. I like sportsshoes.com for shoes as I know which makes and models suit me and have no problem buying last year's colours. Their own brand clothing Higher State, is also very good value.

I have had good sports bras from Asda and Matalan. Their shorts and capri are good too.

I never skimp on my trainers but as for top and bottoms I look for bargains

Lets see what you can do - you can put them on a collage here if you don't have one on your phone / PC

I wouldn't skimp on the shoes but it's totally possible to get decent shoes from Keller or Sportsshoes at around £50 - that would leave me another £50 to kit out my runner. I'd go for:

Leggings from vinted or eBay - £8 approx
Shorts from vinted or eBay - £8 approx

Socks and a sports bra from tk maxx - £14 for the bra, £6 for a pack of socks
Warmer weather running top - probably eBay or vinted again. Seen some good bargains on there around £8-£10
1 X vest 1 X tech tee, again second hand, probably doable for £6 for both of them. This sounds ludicrously cheap but consider I'm selling a NB tech tee on there for £1.50, it's possible to pick up real bargains.

In practice my runner would need at least one other sports bra assuming they were female but I think that's a pretty good stab at building the foundations. Imo the shoes and the sports bra can't be skimped on too much.
