I think if there was a penalty for drawn squares I could imagine side deals taking place to share them out. For the sake of clarity, that wasn’t a formal offer to Chris to split the cake that would probably secure our mutual progression to the next round🤣.

Question - I'm currently in 9th ( although expect to go down ) however, as I'm due for minor surgery next week, I don't want to progress. If I take a break next week, does that automatically exclude me from multi player ?

I wouldn't trust myself to take the right roads and turn my watch on and off at the right times to go around swapping squares. Most days I seem to manage not to start my watch at least once, or to start it when I don't mean to (i.e. for a walk when I'm about to cycle.)
