Thanks for your responses. So far it's looking like the Petal Tikka may be the way to go, as I have no idea how much of my time will be spent in the dark. From reading Flanker's blog, it may be the safest bet.

Has the world of tech moved on? Which head torches do Fetchies use for running now?

I'd be interested to know as well - after a number of years faithful service my Alpkit Gamma has just bitten the dust

I'm still using a LED Lenser H7R.2 - nice and bright, rechargeable battery pack that can be swapped out for AAAs if needed, red light on the rear... In fact I am on my second, after the first one developed a fault after at least 4 years abuse and LED Lenser replaced it under warranty.

I love my Kalenji chest torch from Decathlon. I find it gives you better definition of the terrain ahead, with a headtorch you don’t really see the shadows and I don’t like it in cold weather or fog where it just lights up the water vapour in front of you.

I agree with Meglet, but use a Petzl Tikka R+ where I might need longer battery life (it is rechargeable but you can swap in an AAA carrier). A friend used it for a night marathon last weekend, 5h55 and declared it ace.
I won't go back to a Gamma - it was fine, but the battery compartment breaking issue could leave you high and dry if it happened changing batteries out in the hills.

Am on second LED Lenser 7 also - first one met a sticky end when put through washer in jacket pocket - they really don't like that!

The battery compartment has broken on my Gamma I was going to get a new one as I didn't realise it was an issue - just thought it was youngest being clumsy.
I have the new Kalenji chest torch which is even better than the old one as the light is directionable (is that a word?) and the body straps can be removed and the lamp and back-light/battery connected to a pack.

Contact Alpkit RH, they sent me a replacement battery compartment free of charge despite my Gamma being 5 + years old.

And for when you need portable daylight, I use a Fenix HP30 - 1000 lumens, now replaced by the HP35 @ 1750 lumens. Handily the battery pack has a usb port for charging your garmin on the go...
