It’s a long ride, Homer, but a very entertaining and educational one.

57.5 Degrees of Pain
History Hit are now advertising a US history version which might be interesting. Especially when that country's history is short and therefore gets conflated with origin myths more than most places.
As for the competition, the Noiser Podcast offerings tend to be a fast paced and easier listen on their topics, though sometimes they present things a bit simplistically. The Rest is History would quickly get annoying if you don't warm to the presenters, and if you have a taste for a really deep dive go for Dan Carlin.

The history hit one will be interesting. The US histories I've read - all two of them - seem to devote an alarming amount of time to Brit-bashing.

I've probably not reached the US History ads on History Hit as I'm still on episodes from back at the start of August.

It really is! He's the first person who explained the way WW1 started and made it make sense to me (other than Pvt Baldrick).

AJP Taylor didn't help me much in school on that topic. It took reading a travelog of the Balkans written in 1906 and the breakup of Yugoslavia to make sense of the seething passions and tensions sown by the death throes of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire before it.
