If a fire breaks out in the hold of an Airbus Beluga aircraft, the pilots are meant to climb to high altitude as the lack of oxygen will put the fire out (in theory)

[That sounds a little impractical, as it presupposes that the aircraft has sufficient fuel reserves to enable a climb to a suitable altitude, and that the fire isn’t of sufficient intensity to cause damage which might threaten the airworthiness of the aircraft and crew]

[It was on a Nat Geographic tv about the aircraft so I had to take it to be true. Seems very dubious]

[Doesn't feel tempted to climb to the top of Cleeve Hill to photograph the trig point there to keep up with .B. ;) ]

Of course, jet engines don't need oxygen to work. (TYWTSBC)

[Jet engines compress air heavily, so the oxygen content where the ignition happens is a lot higher than it will be in the hold.]
In fact a fair proportion of the thrust is from air pulled in, compressed and pushed out bypassing the combustion chamber entirely- the engine burns enough fuel to keep the turbine, compressor and fans running.
So it’s not completely bonkers at first sight, but it does sound like a bit of a Hail Mary move.
