Why is that train ticket thing Archaic? If you buy a service from a particular company you cannot expect to use that service from some other company surely?

It is not archaic, that means old fashioned, it is just a modern manifestation brought about by inept privatisation of an important service.

See Electricity, gas, telecommunications....

It actually helps offer a choice. From Cambridge we have a faster, more expensive service to King’s Cross and a slower, cheaper one to Liverpool Street. You can use King’s Cross tickets to and from Liverpool Street, but not the other way round. Same with the slower services from Birmingham to London.

Because John Major's government thought it ws better to offer 'choice' in public services than quality or affordability.

That is debatable, but I was thinking more about 'choice' in the NHS or schooling where what is required is good quality, not 'choice' starting with needs improvement.

To use my argument against myself, until May this year I had a choice of fast or slow trains to London. Now I only have slow and particularly on the return journey, abysmally slow.
