Presumably that's across all of horse racing, rather than just the Grand National? I think someone would've done something if 150+ horses died in a race each year.

In terms of dangerous equestrian activities for both horse and rider...

"Statistics submitted to British Horse Society show that within the last 10 years, 43 humans have lost their lives and 315 horses have been killed as a result of horse riding traffic accidents on our roads. In the last year alone 1037 road incidents involving horses and vehicles were reported to British Horse Society"

I don't know the rider deaths statistics for Eventing at all levels but suspect it is high. I think they are nutters for jumping over solid fences but then I ride my horses on the roads!

[Slow down for horses please. Thank you. (10mph and pass as wide as the road allows) If the rider doesn't thank you for not attempting to kill them they are probably busy holding their horse together, sometimes we need both hands to stay on the reins, rather than an ignorant git. But also please don't kill me because an ignorant git didn't thank you once! :-p

I'm sure all Fetchies are very safe and considerate drivers who understand that the roads are for everyone though, obviously. :-)]

I think horse racing could be made safer for the horses. Starting with letting the poor buggers physically mature before asking them to carry a rider and not putting metal shoes on still developing hooves (the hoof being the main shock absorbing system of the front leg!)

Interesting read nonetheless. If I ever learn to drive I will bear that in mind.
