Possibly only because the confirmation/payment date was later Duchess? I thought it was a full "waiting list" concept, but not according to the FB statement and reply to magoo's Q.

If I remember correctly you had to pay by end Dec last year.
I was thinking that the change is maybe because of the number of entrants, as there will probably be more than 65 not gaining a place in the ballot so it would mean a waiting list would be a lot harder work to deal with. Weren't there only a few folk who didn't get in last year? It's all speculation though. We just have to let whwrunner do his thing and wait and see. I'll be training for the D33 and the fling anyway. Don't think I'd do another big race so it doesn't make a difference to me.

I might not tell my Mum if I don't get in so I can sneak away and crew/sweep if I don't get in without her moaning about babysitting "when you're not even running the race!" She doesn't get the whole crewing/marshalling/sweeping concept!

Indeed, we will just see what comes out. Only 12 didn't get in last year and all 9 who still wanted to got offered a place in Jan according to Magoo. There will be 100 who still want a place, so agree, it would need managing every day right up until near the race, which would be a pain for them. Hey ho!  G

By this time next week we'll all know our fate about this race and either be looking forward to it or planning some other adventure for next Spring.
At least with this one, if you're on the waiting list post-ballot, you're pretty much assured of a place so you can train properly for it knowing you're as good as in.
As this race has been going for many years that's how they'll know fairly accurately how many drop-outs they'll have between now and race day which helps with planning and also not wasting money. I didn't mean to speculate with my comment about the admin around waiting lists, but you probably wouldn't believe how much time goes in to those.
Things like deferrals & priority entries the following year for runners who've either had to pull out or don't get a place are also difficult to manage. We were able to do it for a couple of years on two of our races but it just became un-manageable. On one of our races it got to the point that the next year's race would have been nearly a third full with deferrals before it opened to the public.

What Mike says^^^. So much time of Ian's is already taken up with race ( which he loves doing obv) but he also has a high pressured real job, is chairman Scottish athletics and deputy chair of SAMH, oh and me, he has me. I'm somewhere on the list...
Gav everyone did get offered a place last yr because there weren't that many basically and as MrS said they'd pulled out quite quickly or not taken their place up.

Waiting lists and deferrals don't strike me as a good idea. I think the WHWR has it about spot on. Compare it with the Devil (before Johnny Devil took it over) and all the palava around worrying about moving from the waiting list to a place and the feeling that you were always getting fleeced in the processs.

Don't think you paid to be on the waiting list for the devil. I got a place via the waiting list and paid when given the nod.
It appears there are fundamental issues with the admin of waiting lists and deferrals. I can understand that. I'm surprised it hasn't bern simplified for the race organisers via the online entry systems. Maybe it has? Maybe I need to come up with the solution😉. I've had thoughts about improving entry central....
