Boab, last year they announced it about 8 or 9 December. So you've got a week on tenterhooks!

Anyhoo, for those who are in and who are first-time WHWers, here's my Qs just to whet your appetite (and increase the tension?!)

:-) Excitement of the ballot - and what are you planning, if you don't get in? (even if I don't get in, I'm training as if I am doing it and I might just run it solo the weekend after or something! :-O )
:-) The weekend - how long are you staying, are you booking something in Milngavie for Fri night? Have you got accommodation for Sat yet? Do you book for your crew too?
:-) Are you buying and trying out any new kit for this, your longest, biggest ultra that you've never done before?
:-) And yes, training, never mind am I training in Oct/Nov for June 2015, I've been training since June 2013 for this! What does you training plan look like?
:-) What races are you doing in your build up and what do you hope to get from them?
:-) How are you finding nutrition (in fact, just turn this into the John K quick fire...

blueshoes Road or trail shoes (or do you plan to change them en route and use a mix?)
postracesnack What is your fave food too keep you going when all else fails?
idea Do you use a Garmin, Tom Tom (having listened to Robbie Britton plugging his sponsors!), watch or prefer to run without knowing the time/pace?
gorilla 1 support crew or 2?
pintWater or energy drink (I think he means electrolyte drink, because water and energy drink are for different purposes, imho)
bolt Salt tablets (I'm using the Succeeds S-caps, cos they worked for me at Glenmore. Like Robbie B said, I've no idea of the science, but I'm scared to not take them now!)
gin Bottles or a hydration pack (I've got my UD PB vest, with 2 bottles, but they do dig into my chest a bit - prob stick with that tho).

:-) :-) :-) G

Looks like there won't be a waiting list (latest update on FB from whwrunner, the RD).

Last year, the 10 or 15 who didn't make the ballot, all got in (who wanted). So there must have been a "waiting list" of sorts? Does anyone know why the change this year?

265 will get in through ballot, so up to 100 or so won't. 200 is the race limit, so if more than 65 drop out, then some of the 100 who didn't make the ballot could be allowed in.

Mikey (of RD of several races, as BAM Racing) made a good point that it's extra work for the organisers to maintain a waiting list and to communicate with those waiting etc. Is that the main reason, do you think? Or is it because it's "unfair" to those waiting to train for such a big race but then still maybe not get in?

However, I for one would rather train and hope to get in on a waiting list, than to be told on 9 Dec that I won't get in at all. Some hope is better than no hope, I think?

But, if it's too much work for the organisers, or if there is another good reason, then I totally accept that, of course. Just a shame that there may be fewer than the 200 limit on race day, and someone could have taken their place? :-) G

I'm prepared to get shot down here but are you really going to train adequately on the off chance that you might be offered a place late on? You would need 65 to drop out before you'd even be considered and what if you are near the bottom of the "reserve list" and have to rely on say 100 dropping out? Surely you are more likely to choose other targets and it would be a risk to the RD to offer places to unprepared folks close to race date.

* puts gun away * ;)
I suspect Anna, that the WHW is what people want to run, and will be top priority for them. Sure there are other races around at that time that are actively encouraging those who don't get in to apply. Great Glen Ultra to name one. I know that the some of the people I know will train for the WHW on the off chance of getting in, failing that run the Great Glen or Cataran double, etc

Anna, I would if there were a waiting list. For example, I'm training now, and I don't know if I'll get in!

But there isn't going to be a waiting list. Magoo posted on FB too (he got in after being balloted out last year) but the "getting in" last year wasn't a waiting list, it was places that weren't taken up by the 31 Dec when folk who had been offered a place had to have confirmed their place, by paying through SIEntries.

It is what it is. As Boab says, I've been hoping for this for 2 years, and thinking about it on and off for 3 or 4. I won't be "gutted", if I don't get in, but I will be disappointed. I wonder if WHW organising committee would consider a priority entry for the next year, for those who didn't get in? I suppose by prioritising the minimum 25% first timers quota, they already have, to a certain extent? :-) G

Santa might remember better but I thought some of the people who got places late were actually much later in the process than December? More around getting places as people pulled out after the New Year?
