Thanks Gus. I am coming to accept I might have to stretch the budget. The Alpkit Gravitas does look tempting but slightly annoying that all the reviews list it at £129. It seems to have had quite a price increase. The Balance wasn't reduced when I started this post, so that's good to see. I'm tempted but think cant see how packable it is. I'll have to message Alpkit on Monday. At the moment I'm leaning towards the gravitas but since it's not reduced, there is no rush. Fragile, yes, that was the jacket I was thinking of. One review said the neck zip was annoying when open. |

Waterproof jackets designed for wet weather walking are too hot for running in. It depends on how long you intend to be out, but for days out in the hills, then a fully waterproof running specific one is essential. OMM, Inov8 etc. These will be similar to lightweight walking jackets. (I wear my omm kamelika smock for walking between April and October, but I want something more substantial for winter. However the kamelika is good for running all year round with appropriate base and mid layers). |

If you just want something to wear at low levels, then a cheaper lightweight waterproof will suffice I expect. It all comes down to what precisely you want it for. |

Gore-Tex Active is a 3 layer that uses less glue between the layers which makes for better breathability. There are a few Active jackets on sale, I got the following feedback from Gore-Tex today. I thought the kneeling example was useful as many complaints on water ingress are around backpack straps etc. This makes sense of that. Quote: Hi Kieren, thank you for contacting the GORE-TEX brand. All GORE-TEX materials in GORE-TEX jackets have a water column of at least 28 m. This can be compared to the standard for waterproof clothing of 1.3 m or kneeling on a wet surface, which creates pressure equal to a water column of ca. 15 m. All GORE-TEX Active products have a breathability rating of <4 RET. Kind regards, Linda from #GORETEX |

Gore-tex is really too hot for running in almost all of the time, even Active...it just gets too sweaty OMM Halo? ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk The Montane Minimus is the heaviest jacket that I'd consider running in and even that is often too much. |

It's common to confuse breathability with ventilation. Breathability is the ability for sweat to evaporate through the micro-holes in the membrane. This requires body heat, the outer layer not to wet out and probably doesn't perform as well in humidity. Ventilation is about heat shedding, which may help you need to sweat less. So half / full zips are useful. Sleeves that can be pushed up, vents under armpits etc. All of these add weight and potential points of failure. Anyway, I'm leaning towards Alpkit but Gore-Tex Active seems interesting. There are deals popping up on GT Active shells that use a slightly higher dernier outer shell than the Alpkit Gravitas (7D) yet remain light and packable. The outdoor types probably know all this I'm in the "towny" camp, so it's all new to me |

I remember el Bee telling me on here in very plain terms that breathability in the UK is largely pointless to some extent because of our climate and the humidity we get in wet weather. I'd not bother with Gore-tex for that reason. Honestly, my Kamleika smock is lightweight, packable (I can get my jacket, trousers, a hat, gloves, map, food etc all into my bumbag) and waterproof enough for 3 seasons in the high hills. Definitely for running. The Alpkit version of the OMM jacket looks ok too. |

el Bee had a bit of a point fozzy....but there is still a big difference between them. A good breathing jacket is so much better. Thought once the outer layer wets-out it doesn't matter much I have a range of jackets that some folk think is too big....not me There is no perfect solution. I have a range from very light windproofs with DWR coatings through very light 2.5 layers up to a lovely mountain 3 layer and a big beast. Each trip out I make a choice. I spend a lot of time in the hills and camping. For running...light and ventilation - spot on Kieran...ventilation helps a lot A lot of the time the windproof is enough |

Homer- yes I think he was specifically talking about gore-tex type breathability, not ventilation. I'm sure if we say his name enough times, he'll appear like he usually does. el bee? |
