Don't be shocked at the calories, eb, if that's what you need it's what you need (and doing Crossfit means you probably do), and 3000 calories of proper food a day is much better than trying to skimp, getting hungry, and hitting the biscuits hard.

Thinking about protein (and I know it’s a controversial topic for vegans!) I’ve started using Huel for breakfast. Has anyone else tried it? It’s billed as a meal replacement and makes a quick, convenient and filling occasional breakfast, although taste is less than exciting!

my understanding (limited) is that we dont need nearly as much protein as some people try and load up on.

Ive never really tried to push one macro group more than another, but I feel ok, like I might survive the day....

I personally try and avoid over-processed protein, like meal replacement, protein shakes, whey powder etc...

Yep, GG, I hear you on the meat substitutes...not something I fancy, for the same reason as above. If I want meat, I will have it. But I will quite happily eat mostly vegetarian/vegan meals.

I've had Huel for lunches sometimes and don't mind it. I don't tend to worry about protein though and I'm another who mostly gets this from whole foods.

Fake meats have their place as an occasional food. They make it easier for non-vegan family members to know what to cook. I wouldn't want to eat them more than about once a week though.

I have waffles for breakfast using quite a proteiny recipe - 100ml soya milk, 35g oats, 1 tsp flaxseed, quarter scoop of protein powder (you can get vegan ones from Bulk Powders), whizzed briefly in a blender. I top them with soya yoghurt and fruit. Quantities depend on waffle makers (ours does 4 fairly large ones and this is the quantity for one). MyFitnessPal reckons this breakfast is about 17g protein, and just over 300 calories. I imagine you could use Huel as an ingredient although I've not tried using it. We've got some though and I'm not massively keen on it as a shake-type thing, so might give waffling with it a go.

It's simple. If we eat a well balanced diet that is sufficient calorie wise for our lifestyle then protein will most likely take care of itself. As vegans we are no more likely to need to supplement it as Omni's. Is only the dairy and meat industries keep perpetuating the myth that you need more.

It's become farcical. I saw high protein advent calendars advertised for Christmas. Can anyone really tell me they have ever checked protein values when buying an advent calendar?

I did buy a protein ball advent calendar but only because I'm a sucker for anything new and it had a Christmas pudding which said Pro-ho-ho-tein on it, which was cute. It would have had negligible protein content anyway.

I think that all the concern over protein would be better directed towards fibre.

You bought it because you wanted it not because you needed it, or thought you did, though 💚

Jesus loved orthorexics too, and would have wanted them to have Advent calendars ;)
