...suddenly gripped with courage, Scrooge lunged forward and wrenched the femur from the skeletal leg of the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come. It came away surprisingly easily in his hand, and the gasp that came from its insides told Ebenezer that he must press home his advantage. With a firm strike, he brought it down like a club on the skull of the unsuspecting ghost, shattering it like a ripe melon. The ghost collapsed inside its cloak with a muffled clatter, and moved no more. Scrooge stood over him, panting with exhilaration. "So", he thought, "people would rejoice at my death". With a determined grimace, he stepped over the crumpled spirit, marched out of the graveyard. He set out toward the city, the bone still gripped tightly in his hand, and a renewed vigour in his heart for everything that had driven him to this point. The spirits had shown him the way. He would make everyone regret this.

HowFar?
She leapt into the waiting coach and, with a quick crack of the whip, the horseman had it speeding away from the palace in no time. Woken from his slumber by the sudden clatter of hooves, the rat faced begged hauled himself out from behind the bins. He hadn’t been the same since that girl had somehow guessed his name. All that gold spinning and what did he have to show for it? Calloused hands, a dodgy knee and not a penny to his name.

He walked towards the steps of the palace, hopeful that some of the toffs coming out from the ball might take pity on him and throw him some scraps from the table. A rush of uniformed guards burst from the ballroom, with the prince close behind. They seemed to be searching for someone. Probably one of the local scoundrels, trying to sneak into the kitchens while everyone was busy to help themselves to some bread and meat.

He pulled his ragged cloak round his shoulders, trying to keep the damp out. And then he spotted it. A glint of light from the bottom of the steps. He sidled over to investigate, then shook his head.

“Why does there always seem to be one shoe left lying in the gutter,” he thought. “These people get s few drinks inside them and lose all control. Probably that hen party that went through the village earlier that night.”

He picked up the shoe.

“Glass,” he muttered, “That might come in handy. I bet the old glass blower would give me a coin or two for that - probably get a couple of bottles out of it. Pity the girl hadn’t had bigger feet. It would have been worth at least a week’s board somewhere if one of those two hideous girls he’d spotted going into the palace earlier had lost one of their big clown shoes.” Still, it should be enough for a decent meal or two.

He picked it up and shoved it in his bag.

Little Red entered the house cautiously. Her grandmother was old but perfectly able to answer her own door so the girl was concerned, not least because the front door had been left ajar. There were signs of disarray in the kitchen and a chair knocked over in the living room. As the girl climbed the stairs she heard muffled noises and froze, then continued her climb even more stealthily. The entrance to her grandmother’s bedroom was ajar and she called out softly ‘grandma?’ but only heard a snuffling noise in response. Upon entering the bedroom she saw a shape bent over the bed. It was wearing her grandmother’s clothes and appeared to have her hair but as the girl rounded the corner, she saw the blood. It covered the bed, the floor and the old woman’s face as she tore into the dead wolf on her bed with her teeth.

'Well, Rudolph, that was a foggy run this year', Santa said. 'I don't think I've ever seen your nose glow so brightly. There's no way could have navigated Asia without you, good lad! I think you've taught some of the others your trick too, Comet and Cupid's noses seem to be pink! Next year will be a breeze'.

December 2020.

The Lancet
**Breaking news**

The animal vector responsible for Coronovirus crossing to the human population is not the bat species originally considered. Reindeer carry it in high concentrations in their nasal passages. Given their geographic isolation in the high arctic research continues to uncover the mechanism behind the unprecedented speed at which the virus spread around tge world.

And Santa thought he would be able to put up his feet on Christmas Day evening but in light of the news in the Lancet he puts his suit and boots back on and with a shake of magic dust he cures his reindeer and they have plenty of antibodies. With the help of the elves he sets to work to creat a vaccine.

It’s hard work and they forget time and the world suffers throughout January and February. Santa asks for help and the scientists of the world go to the North Pole to help. Unfortunately one of the scientists is infected and Santa falls ill.

um 🎄
So a whole new story?

--- The scientists and elves continue working away, desperate to save Santa.
By early December they have a fix, Santa is vaccinated, but wait, there's a catch.
Because they did all their work at the North Pole, the vaccine only works at -70C ....
