L100 is run over hard ground. I'd suggest getting as many miles / hours on feet in as you can both running and walking and include plenty of climbing (5,000ft per week, if not every week then maybe every other). Do not underestimate the terrain itself; for many runners (me included) its a real problem!

Good point DT, wet boggy ground is both energy sapping and mentally exhausting/demoralising particularly if there are long unbroken stretches of it. Not to mention what it does to your feet. Some interesting first thoughts coming out from the 'Spiners' and the mud/bog etc features heavily.

Thanks DT, I'd not given a whole lot of thought to the terrain. I'm stuck between the Dales and the Moors, so it tends to be trails and/or bog .. not the worst prep?! Bit short on scree though (at least, I've not found any yet). Getting in the mileage and ascent not so much an issue, I think. Will check some L100 recces, though.

I got a good 50 miler schedule from a Fetchie, linked from Runners World (don't shoot me!) Decent mileage, I thought, for a "flat 50" (which mine isn't!)

Lovely, HG! Some decent mileage in there, especially the weekend. Might tweak the Tuesday run for a medium-long hill run, and replace rest with a recovery run but otherwise .. yes, very nice!

Very interesting plan, I'm tempted to use that for my flat 60!

01, some time spent on classic Dales green lanes would be valuable. Problem with L100 is a lot of the ground is hard and rough (and tarmac :-O)

Just found this thread. Still chuckling about Flip's comments on the HM30. He's right, it was a Tough Twat alright :-)

Good stuff, DT. Never heard of 'green lanes' before, but a spot of Googling and think I'm on the right track (haha!) - the old Cam Road along Dodd Fell I know. Fairly hard and rough, from memory :)

Just done a fair ol' whack of the Hadrian's Wall path, so somewhat au fait with tarmac. Bit of a leg masher at the end.
