Mud like that is no fun for anyone
I think the best thing is to not try to change course, just tie your shoes tight and go for the middle!
Oddly enough most of the brits who do the MDS end up training in this. It's actually really effective for practicing running in sand dunes

It's not all like that I'm just being dramatic for effect! - the first two pics are on the GSR either side of Sandy, Binks, and the last one is on the Skylark ride going up to Tetworth - they can all be avoided. But I like "normal" muddy paths and find my roclites gave the best grip but still had enough cushioning for my old feet on harder or road sections . Hoping the lighter modern inov-8s are the same.
And Mulbs, NO! my idea of hell - all that sand, heat and being herded around at huge expense, don't think so - even if I was ever fit enough it would not appeal.

**shoe construction geek alert**
You've got to watch with Inov8 shoes - they use 3 different types of EVA in the midsole iacross all the different models : EVA, Injected EVA and Compressed EVA.
I've found that the Injected EVA offers quite a bit more cushioning than the equivalent amount of EVA or Compressed EVA.
eg I find the Race Ultra 290 is more cushioned than the Roclite 315 and way more than the Roclite 295. The surprising one is that the X-Talon uses Injected EVA, and I do find the X-Talon remarkably comfortable for such a minimal shoe.
The new Terraclaw uses Compressed EVA and that sort of ties in with various reviews I read that it's not very comfortable on road.
Even in the same model range they sometimes use different midsoles, ie the Race Ultra 290 uses Injected EVA but the Race Ultra 270 ( as well as being more minimal ) uses the less cushioned Compressed EVA.
The inov8 website tells you which shoe uses which midsole material

ooo interesting Gus - thank you
the ultra 290s are very comfy - just not enough grip even on "normal" mud - in fact they're so comfy, if I can find another dark coloured pair cheaply I'm going to have some for work shoes

the roclite 280s are "EVA" - so maybe they're the best bet - I shall report back when Mr Wiggle delivers

Thanks Gus. X-talons are my shoe of choice for ultras because they offer grip on pretty much anything and are surprisingly comfortable on road/hard pack. Now I know why. Only downside is that the studs wear quite quickly on road and hard pack but I've come to conclusion that is a small price to pay for having a shoe I can wear for a long time pretty much straight from the box.

I think the X-talons are too low a drop for my achilles - are they all the 1 arrow? - off to check...

oooo the 212 is a 6mm drop, interesting. I may have read "The number one choice for elite athletes wanting to run fast off-trail" and decided that wasn't me
