That does look rather lovely country GeeeM -maybe one to put on the ever growing wishlist :)

I survived 13.1 run/walk/gossip in the wind at StNeots yesterday, with no PF twinges this morning :)

Why is a 13 mile run on the ultra beginners thread? - because it's the longest run I've managed since my foot gt too painful back in April and marks the start of winter building miles back up properly.

I may be asking lots of daft questions over the next few months !

No such thing as a daft question, RH
They're all just questions :)

Good news on the PF. Mine is still hanging about a bit.

PF is a curse. I was chatting to a bloke about it this morning at swim training, he hasn't been able to run all year because of it. I'm reliably informed that wearing a moderate high heel for a few hours a day helps massively, not that some of us need that excuse :-) Where's me Jimmy Choos ....

I started wearing inch and a bit heels to work in September and old fashioned ( I think V'rap calls them oil rig platform) walking books to walk the dog. Combination of avoidance of flat shoes in everyday walking, lots of rest over the summer and the Naproxen nice GP gave me for my trigger finger seems to have seen the last ouches off (lots of touching wood). I wish I'd stopped running sooner, but glad I decided to stop when I did.

Now it's just a question of finding the balance between enough and too many miles for a while

Hopefully the esteemed Ultra runners of this parish can answer this question?

If intending to run-walk the 'A' race, do I only use run-walk during training for the long run?

No, mix it up. But do include walking (hard)

a shoe question if I may:

My beloved roclite 315s have done ~700 miles and are starting to show it - and my feet object to running on the road for more than a mile or so in them - and I can't always avoid road sections in long runs. They don't make them any more :(

I have some ultra 290s which I get on with OK (bargain from sportspursuit, are they not popular?), they are fine on the field tracks and don't kill my feet on the road stretches - but they are pretty shit in the mud.

I've been looking at the new terraclaw 250s, thinking that they look a bit like 290s with better grip. Is that correct thinking? anyone run in them? Would lighter roclites be a better swap ( 295s/280s are cheaper than terraclaws) I think I'm limited to buying online - no idea where inov-8s are stocked locally ...anything else I could look at? I need some cushioning 'cos I'm old and heavy!

I have a similar dilemma Rosehip - My 315s are splitting along the top, although the soles are still fine after 770+ miles. I've tried on the 295s but wasn't impressed (felt too flimsy), the 280s felt quite a bit better but in my usual size felt a half size too small so I'm waiting for Pete Bland to send the replacement pair
