I've done four Ultras now

Connemara 39.3 in April (turned out to be 40 lol) great experience loved it, Foxy Enigma Gold in July a necessary evil ;-), Thunder Run 24 hours was an experience 100k done, and finally JW Ultra last weekend hard slog.

That's nice HoD (;-) ) So what are your views on training (thread topic and my question! :-P )

Have you blogged JW? (*off to see if you have - enjoyed Hendog's blog of it, need to read neems's as well). :-) G

Missed this thread before so watching now. I was due to do an ultra in July but missed it due to injury. I plan to do another next spring but just deciding which to do. I have the Windermere marathon mid May so mid june would work well.

There's a huge choice in the spring, redeaston :) Have you got your eye on a particular event?

HappyG(rrr), I'm definitely no expert, but that training plan overview seems good to me. I've got a ultra training book that has a 51 (!) week schedule, and that has speed sessions throughout the year - think it's tempo stuff earlier, and intervals later.

Personally (for L100 next year), I'm going for:
- 5 months of base building; basically, lots of miles and shortish hills, but nothing especially fast or long (maybe some parkruns)
- 4 months of more specific training: longer hills, longer runs, course recces
- 3 weeks of taper

I'll jazz up my plan on a week by week basis just for a bit of variety, but that's basically it. For me, consistency of training is probably more important than anything else - I'd rather skip speedwork if I feel it's more likely to injure me, for example. Maybe that's me starting to feel old :)

Nice one nutty. That's what I think too - consistent miles, the longer runs, obviously, maybe some of them back to back (did quite a few of those this year before the 24 hour). The things I didn't do much of was speed work and hills. I know for this one I need to do hills in training, but I think you can't do hill reps every day, so actually some gym strength work (jumping off the bench, hopping up stairs etc.) might be required too. :-) G

I like the look of your plan, :)G, but I'm less experienced at long distances than you are and can't comment beyond that. I pretty much winged my only attempt at 100 miles and the fact that I came within a whisker of getting away with it makes me think that with a bit of work I could probably do justice to the distance.

"Up north" is one of my criteria too. Same reason. The one that jumps out for June at the moment is ultimatetrails.com but I'm sure there will be others as time goes on.

I'm also running Windermere, but am not sure that I'll want to do an ultra between that and the Lakeland 50, because if I race Windermere it'll be important not to play fast and loose with my recovery and I don't want to go into the Lakeland 50 under-rested.
