Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Can't recall the Premier Inn I'm in but as driving choose one away from the City Centre so didn't have to mess about with parking.

Just found this thread - I should really pay more attention to the forums rather than just reading my watched threads!

DT - I am also getting married this year and am finding balancing the last two months of wedding planning with ultra training very challenging! A lot of stuff is so time consuming, but I do find I can figure out bits and pieces in my head on the run which is handy. Increasingly my lunchtime runs are being replaced by dress fittings/flower appointments etc, which is a PITA though :/

I'm in my 3rd year of running ultras now and leveling up to the next stage this year with the Great Glen Ultra. My race plan is:
15th March - D33
[22nd March - wedding, then two week honeymoon. No running possible!]
26th April - Fling (53 mi)
17th May - Cateran Trail (55mi)
5th July - Great Glen (72mi)
[a nice rest]
6th Sept - Glenmore 12hr

I am a bit worried about the honeymoon disrupting things, but I am taking the mrs_s approach and training hard to the D33 and then recovering well I suppose. Last year I ran very little between D33 and Fling because I got bursitis in my knee, so I know I can do a similar thing this year. It's not ideal, but getting married is a pretty good excuse. The one big run I did in between the D33/Fling last year was the Paris marathon at the start of April and I casually took 20 minutes off my PB without trying, so the race hard/recover hard method really works for me once I am at peak fitness!

The biggest B2B I did in Fling training last year was 22/16 I think, and that was at the end of January. The big B2Bs really started to wear me down after about a month of Fling training so I really dialled down the distance of the second run and found I was a lot happier. I was then worried that I wouldn't be fit enough for the Fling if I couldn't do 'proper' back to backs, but that was nonsense as I ran strongly throughout the race and completed it in a smidge over 13 hours, and was still running at the finish. I was using the Relentless Forward Progress 50 mile plan for long runs and it turned out too much for me and my life - maybe if I didn't have such a stressful job/long hours I'd be ok!

I think the biggest lesson I learned was the one which is drummed into us from day 1 as budding ultra-runners - what works for one person might not work for you, and the only way you can figure out what works for you...is by trial and error! Just because one training method doesn't work it doesn't mean you can't do the race. When the wheels started to come off my training last year I started looking at my friends' plans and discovered I was running way more than some of my very experienced pals those who were training for the WHW race so I knew there was plenty of room to review what I was doing and still succeed.

The second biggest lesson I have learned, is that a gin-in-a-tin in your drop bag at 40 miles is manna from heaven, and hula hoops have fairy dust in them that make you run forever.

Good luck with the marriage plans RWR!

What we sometimes do at weekends is to go hill-walking on a Sunday after a long run / race on the Saturday. We typically walk the up-hills hard(ish) but walk the down-hills steady maybe with just some gentle jogging. 3 or 4 hours walking, say 10 miles with 3000 or 4000 feet climb is still a decent work-out I reckon, and relevant for hilly ultra events ;-)

I marathon trained right through my honeymoon. I'm about to get divorced. The two things may or may not be related :)
