Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

If I did the summer spine I know at the end the thought would be, "right, done that, suppose I should try the proper one". That's just the way I work. Which is why I'll not bother (along with the cost!). If I was doing it in the summer I'd rather fastpack it solo.

While 268 miles is without doubt a long way it's not mind-blowing in the summer. Allowing for 5 hours rest per day, it's still less than 2mph when moving if you take 7 days, and with long hours of daylight, reasonable weather and good conditions under foot that's pretty achievable.

In January conditions it's a different kettle of fish.

I have to say while I’m never going to be at a level to run the spine or even the challenger, if I was I’d want to do the harder one - that I also hate rain and wind means it’s another reason not to do it. But dragons back…. (Shhh I didn’t say that)

It's the Cape Wrath ultra that appeals to me, but like the dragons back, I'm not sure I go for the none continuous element. Or the cost. Both Spine races appeal to me, but are too expensive, especially given the kit needed for the winter spine.

I may not be doing any more organised events after this summer. And I may yet not get to the L100 given my fitness / injury state.

I'd like to go further on the PW, and summer & being low key suits me fine if I was to do challenger. I'm not interested in the winter slog, that's a different event entirely imo.

Being happy to go self sufficient / fastpacking I'm more likely to do Hebden northwards for a few days later this summer then maybe sections further north still in 2023 and beyond until I've done the whole PW.

I found the organisation of the sprint event to be the best I've experienced around and at a race, it was flawless nothing is overlooked and the care at the finish was amazing.

I am more thinking of doing ‘solo’ events with a friend in our time in our way. Plan to do WHW next year I’d like 3 days she’s thinking 5 so maybe 4…

The kit for spine & having carrying it all means you need top of the range lightweight stuff. I would need a lottery win.

I used to be in the same club as one of the runners who consistently high placed at the Spine. He said something about the only way he could get quicker was lighter or less kit but he was also acutely aware of how vital it was and how vital in particularly on one of the more wintry of Spines.

One of our club runners was 2nd female. She was on a podcast and said her bag weighed 9kg she’s tiny! But she said to cut the weight the cost was huge.

My bag for GL3D was 13kg and it didn’t have food in! It made me think I’ll stick with dot watching.

Dragons Back is one race I'd love to do but I think I ruled it out the other week. One day out on the Helvellyn edges convinced me I would probably struggle over especially day one of the Dragons Back.

Even my very non-ultra running friend, does quite like the idea of it. His type of terrain he says.

We did 3day Great Lakes I looked back after crossing Grisedale to whiteleas I’d have had a fit had I seen the ridge… didn’t feel quite that scary in the top..
Maybe a reccie and leave it there.
